GaryM Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Have a MKIII 1.8 diesel and was wondering is anyone is running thiers on biofuel? The owners guide suggests that a 5% mix is as far as you can go with this which is what tescos sell anyway, I think. Seems to be more of a generic "we can't be bothererd" statement rather than there being specific reasons. With the increasing fuel & tax costs biodiesel is looking more attractive evrey day. In fact if you belive the blurb it is better for you motor anyway. I know that I'd have to change the fuel filter after switch over but wondered if there were specific reasons that a 1.8 would not run with it? Quote

Hi there ive ran my 98 s reg galaxy on 100% bio with no probs and now i have a seat alhambra 2001 model x reg and i run that on 100% bio and have been for the last 3 months not sure what year yours is so make your own mind up on that one but at 35-40 pence a litre on home brew its a big saving. insider Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 The Mk I engines could cope with biodiesel but the PD engines in the Mk IIs will not tolerate it long term.Definitely do not use it in the Mk III as it is a common-rail type engine with very high fuel pressures.(There is a reason why 5% maximum is stated in the owners manual for both MkIII and MkII cars. Of course the people selling biodiesel will tell you how good it is for your engine!) Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Hi,As 'Insider' has said, the Mk3 Galaxies are common rail, and there is a very real risk of fuel pump failure if you use biodiesel in greater quantities than 10%. This is not only Ford - ALL manufacturers have found the same problems and have come to the same conclusions. The failure mode is well known and warranty claims have been rejected because of using the wrong fuel. In addition, the failed fuel pump can also cause injector failure due to debris getting into the injectors. VW initially said the Mk2 with the PD engine could run 100% bio, but rapidly backed down when the warranty costs went up - later cars had a max 10% label added to the fuel filler label. George. Quote
