mark1rev Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 hi all have been having problems with my 2.3 gal, oil pressure light keep coming on, yesterday removed sump to clean pick up tube and there was plastiky sort of bits in the oil pick up hole ? looks like its broke off somewere in engine .when i replaced sump and started it up oil light was still on and realy rattling then after about a min light went off and engine was very quiet . it seems to do this and a couple of times a day. the only other thing that it was doing before was a rattling chain noise but now this seems to have gone. other than that it still drives ok when light goes out and is no more rattling chain Quote
mk2vr6 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 with the sump removed and the pick up pipe removed the oil pump was probably empty and upon start up the engine had no oil pressure due to pump starvation hence the noise! as to the plasticky bits? probably cam chain tension blades! not a good thing! mark1rev Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 what do these cam blades do ? Quote
mk2vr6 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 (edited) IIRC the main cam chain tensioner is a sprocket on a sprung arm arrangment? in between the cams in the head there is a chain guide to stop the chain slap, and on the oil pump chain there are two tensioner/guides, so it could any of these breaking up! and the purpose of these are to keep the cam chain tight so it doesnt jump a cog or move around to much and wear a hole through the covers or the block! mk2vr6 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 they are inside the engine, behind covers they use the same oil supply to lubricate themselves Quote
mark1rev Posted March 29, 2008 Author Report Posted March 29, 2008 they are inside the engine, behind covers they use the same oil supply to lubricate themselves update --oil lights been off all week only came on again yesterday still for about 2 min Quote
