Mussey1 Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Hi All, On my car I sometimes get a very slight hesitation when accelerating from about 2000rpm. This normally occurs only when the engine has reached normal operating temp.I know that it's not the Maf as according to the service records it was replaced just prior to me buying the car @ 60,000mls and the car pulls like a train up to the red line (not that I get the chance to do that often!!!). Is this a normal characterisitic of the 110 diesel engine?? Other than that the car runs really well. Any comments? Thanks. Mussey1. Quote
Guest Turbo Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I have to say that my 110 Tdi does not hesitate or have a flat spot anywhere in the rev range. It sounds like a bit of turbo lag and I suppose it could be. There is possibly something not quite right with the turbo actuator (wastegate) but they do not usually give much trouble. If it was stuck partially open then I think you may get a slight hesitation as the extra boost builds up. Is the fuel filter changed at the correct service intervals ? Is the air filter ok ? If it`s not too bad can you live with it ?? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I would check your pipework---- Also, make sure the EGR is clean, and isn't leaking air. Sounds like you have an air supply problem, which could be downwind or upstream of the turbo, Turbo. Quote
Guest Turbo Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Hey SA I have a hissing type noise when accelerating, but it doesn`t effect the performance at all. Is it normal ? I`ve checked as much pipe work to turbo area as I can, but all seems well. I think it`s possibly a noisey actuator. I can`t find a large dump valve in there...... Quote
Mussey1 Posted February 13, 2004 Author Report Posted February 13, 2004 Had a look at the air filter housing, It appears that I may be missing a clip on the back of the housing, as I assume there are meant to be three clips. Could this be enough to cause any problems?? Does the Maf have to come off to get to the filter? Haynes says to loosen the screws holding the MAF onto the filter housing body, but I think they are tamperproof Torx type. Also is 60k the right time to change the filter, I had always thought filters were changed about once per year!! Is it better to change them more often? Mussey1. Quote
seatkid Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 Turbo, some turbos hiss and/or whistle more noticeably than others (less well balanced). Hiss can also be associated with leaks on the boost side. Check the main air pipe connections turbo onwards and also the intercooler at the front which may have a small hole or be damaged. Small leaks don't affect performace as the turbo just works a little harder. Finally there is a small possibility that the intercooler is becoming blocked (with gunge) but I would have thought this would noticeably affect performance. Mussey1 you have to disconnect the MAF from the filter housing, on mine its two allen key bolts. Air filter change is specified at 30k, also clean out the filter housing. Missing clip at back shouldn't affect the performance but increases possibility of dust and dirt getting into MAF/ engine which will do it no good at all. If your filter hasnt been changed for 60k could be the reason for poor performance. Quote
Guest Turbo Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 Thanks Seatkid. I`ve checked the pipes etc round about the turbo and all seems well but this weekend I`ll have a look at the intercooler. It`s not a turbo balance whine but more of a hissing sound. Mussey1, the tamperproof torx bits are not the ones to undo, but the allen screws that face away from you on the pipe that the MAF sensor goes into. If you need a MAF sensor you get all this bit, plastic fitting and MAF sensor all in one bit. Quote
