kmac Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 Not sure what you are asking for exists....most vehicles now have electronic engine management etc so you can't just have simple electronics. Also, would mean you didn't have things like power steering, ABS, traction control..all things I'd say were essential these days. Might be easier if you did a course on car electronics :o Quote
searcher Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 I understand what you mean though. You just want a basic car with just the basic electronics that it needs to make it go and stop like the good old days.Theres some sense in what you are saying but to convert a car which has all the electronics fitted to ripping it all out i think you could be on to a non starter. If yo do manage it then please tell all.Maybe you could find an older car without so much fitted but improve the comfort etc etc etc to make it a bit more like a modern day car Quote
Emily's dad Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 I totally agree with the wish to rid cars of too many electrical odds and ends I've just got rid on one of my toys, a 1974 Rover P6 3500s, so simple to work on, if you had a spark and fuel you had forward motion. With a bit of time and logical thinking there wasn't anything that couldn't be easily fixed with the most basic of tools. Dave. Quote
MrT Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 Whilst I am (was?) an electronics expert, I do not think there is very much need for electronics knowledge when working on the car. If any electronics bit goes wrong, it normally needs replacement, the inner workings are not usually fixable and you really just need to know what that electronics unit does rather than how it does it and which unit needs replacing. Some sort of code reader for the electronics is useful in maintenance as it can tell you the faults reported by the electronics units. The electrical things that go wrong in the car are more often than not, the tradtional things that have always gone wrong, wiring breaking, poor connections, ignition coils breaking down with age and dodgy relays. I suppose the modern bits that do go wrong are the electrical sensors and these have to be replaced. When this happens they are little different to replacing the old fashioned sensors and parts such as oil pressure warning, temperature sensor and also the ignition condensor (remember those?). In some ways electronics are simpler, remember having to change ignition points, setting the gap then using a strobe to check the timing and rotating the distributor to do this? Again trying to balance a set of SU carbs to get smooth running was not exactly an easy task. Quote
kawasaki-krazy Posted March 12, 2008 Author Report Posted March 12, 2008 Thanks for the replies guys Some sort of code reader for the electronics is useful in maintenance as it can tell you the faults reported by the electronics units. Now you see I understand the things you mention, and most of them can be repaired (more often than not) on the side of the road. (I can do these things, myself, in my own garage.) If a sensor goes....then the thing stops (more often than not) and Frauds want megabucks to get you going again. The thing with all this, is the fact that all these extras cost money. I also have an Escort with a faulty MAF sensor and just checked the price today from a Fraud dealer ......... Quote
