Guest Ross Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I'm about to have to get new rear tyres on the car, it currently has Dunlops on which to me seem quite loud. I also have a Cupra and recently fitted Pirelli P Zero Rosso's which grip really well but made the car significantly quieter. Has anyone had any experience of brands other than Dunlop?, I'm not after super mileage or tremendous grip really my focus is refinement which in terms of niose is usually down to the tread pattern. Any comments are appreciated. Many thanks Ross Quote
seatkid Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 look here and here and try a search on "tyres" Quote
Guest Mark_Galaxy Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Good luck, I had to replace two fronts and they dont come cheap.Evidently since the Galaxy has such a heavy curb weight the tyres are re inforcedGuess what Dunlop are the only manufacturers. After looking for alternatives I had to conceed to purchasing the Dunlop's Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Dunlop are not the only manufacturers. Where did you get that from? All the major brands have them. They can be bought from around Quote
NikpV Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Really - Last summer the only two alternatives for 215/55 reinforced were dunlop or (even more expensive) Michelin's there was a rumour that another manufacturer were bringing one out. Do you need reinforced tyres - there seems to be some confusion at the moment??? Nik Quote
Dally Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 FYIcopy of a previous post: "My 2002 2.3 ran on the Dunlops - reasonably quiet they were. My 2003 V6 has got Michelin Pilots on and they create much more noise! Haven't seen many Galaxy's with these on (Oh Why Ford?). Is it because it's a V6?? PS They cost alot more than the 2020's too! " Quote
NikpV Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 It appears that Ford fit the Michelin Pilots, Do they wear any better than the Dunlops. We bought our galaxy at about 20K miles and the tyres on the from lasted to about 25K. We replaced all round (kept two michelins from the back)with Dunlops and 13K miles later the front are looking decidedly worn. Nik Quote
Guest Andy Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 You will not get a harder wearing tyre than Michelins....    Quote
Dally Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Michelins are well known for hard wearing but I'd give them up for the more supple and quiet Dunlop 2020's! Quote
iainkirk Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I got 17000 out of my front 2020s, probably had 1000 miles left in 'em down to the TWI. Rears look like they've got another 30,000 miles left in them. Ooh Deja Vu...didn't I type this in another thread... Should I have but my rears on the front????? Quote
SirToppamHat Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I am in a similar position to Ross, with about 4 wks worth of wear left on my front 2020s. WRT the reinforced question, I have not been able to get a definitive line from the Ford Dealer which, incidentally, has a co-located Fast Fit tyre place, which they also own. They too were no help, and quoted extortionate rates for the Dunlops. All their 'used approved' Gals had Dunlop 2020s fitted. I thought I'd be a bit devious and went to VW and SEAT, to see what sort of tyres they fit: SEAT: Michelin Pilot HX Extra Load VW: Dunlop 2020 and Bridgestone ER30C Went back to Ford today and notice that the brand new Gal 1.9TDi Ghia was wearing Firestone FireHawk 700s (215/55 R16 97H). Cheapest price found for Dunlops so far Quote
NikpV Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Went to local Ford rapidfit today priced up 2 front tyres - Fitting +valves Quote
SirToppamHat Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 NickPV That's a good price, where is your local RapidFit? Found a couple of Pirelli P6000s here. 2 Brand New Pirellis on EBay Looks like a good price, but are they reinforced? STH Quote
Guest Turbo Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I may be wrong, but I don`t think those P6000`s will be reinforced as these tyres are available for "ordinary cars " and I would think they would call them something else if they were different. I`m not sure that Pirelli do tyres for Galaxy`s etc. Quote
NikpV Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 That's a good price, where is your local RapidFit? This one is in Shefford, Bedfordshire. Last year the best they could do was Quote
Guest mrsiep Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 have had the same problem with cost of tyres after 2 days i tracked down 2 mitchelin 205 60 15 part worn with 5mm of tread (rienforced) fitted ballanced all for 45 quid bargain. sie Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 2nd hand Tyres? Don't fancy that at all. Quote
Guest mrsiep Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 my thoughts to start with but checked tyres first as they were on a fire damaged galaxy and no wall damage or puncture repairs and the rims they came of were undamaged. Quote
