MarkRArnold Posted March 2, 2008 Report Posted March 2, 2008 (edited) Hi all, We have a 1997 Galaxy (2.8 V6 GhiaX 4x4 Auto). Yesterday it started a loud sqeeling noise which I can only assume was the belt on the left hand side of the engine (drivers side). I think it must be slipping as the battery light came on so it can't be spinning the alternator properly. I can't see any damage on the belt itself, so I has wondering if it can simply be tightened up as a short term fix as I do on my Classic Mini? Or will be need replacing straight away?? If it does need replacing immediately, can anyone point me in the direction of 'How-To' as I'm a bit of a novice and also can't afford any expensive mechanics bills?!?! Thanks everso!! Hi Mark if thats all it is is slipping ! and the belt its self is ok (see if there is any cracks across the belt) then just adjust the belt, by undoing the tensioner bolt, moving the pulley, so as to tighten the belt. if you cannot take up the slack, you will need a new belt, and as stated undo and slacken adjuster take off old belt, replace with new and tighten up, not too sure but about 1/2 inch play at the longest bit will about right for tension Radiotwo Quote
Stevoo Posted March 2, 2008 Report Posted March 2, 2008 start car and put some talcum powder on the belt if it goes away for a bit then, sounds like your tensioner is faulty. but i would do cheapest options and replace belt first. Quote
