Hi all, my 98 S plate 1.9 tdi galaxy has started smoking somewhat more than she used to the last few weeks, seems to be running ok though, but have noticed that if i leave her ticking over on the drive and the rev up now and again i get a nice black patch on the floor under the exhaust as well as the clouds of smoke, seems to be a grey/white colour to me. I hope you can give me a few suggestions as to what this could be and save the poor people that have to follow me !, i'm by no means a master of the mechanical world so any help is welcomed as my wallet is empty

thanks Andy T

Sounds like a diesel Andy and as long as she's running Ok then I wouldn't over worry yourself about it. You will get a dark patch on the floor when you rev her up as you're blowing the soot out of the exhaust along with water produced by condensation. When was the last time she was serviced. You may like to do this yourself; Oil change, air and fuel filter ...... these can effect the emissions. When was the last time you gave her a good long thrunge as the oil can be affected by short trips? Are you sure the smoke is coming from the engine exhaust and not the Booster heater exhaust? ...... just a few thoughts you might like to consider.

thanks for the info, but it's a little more smoke than the usual i think, there never used to be this much and it's kinda embarrasing at times, the bit that puzzles me is that it doesn't seem to be every time either and i'm fairly sure its not the aux heater as i put my hand on the exhaust for that and that was cold !

A friend of mine finaly narrowed it down to the injectors sealing O rings, air was sucking past one of them.

Also check the MAF as i had black marks on the ground and lots of smoke until i changed mine (on a V6 petrol).

I know what chasing problems is like so take my advise and start with the cheapest option, well worth the investment is a diagnostic with someone who a. has the right kit. and b. knows what they are doing.
