Hi, its my Galaxy's monthly problem time. It amazes me how this car can come up with something new on such a regular basis to cost me lots of money to put right.........

Hope some one can help.

Upon cold starting the engine idles very roughly and produces a lot of white smoke which I believe is unburnt fuel. However, when the car has been driven and starts to warm up it seams to be ok. Even when it has been left for a few hours and restarted it seams to run fine. So, checked the glow plugs fuse which was fine, so I decided to change the glow plugs. No difference. Then I noticed that the engine water temp gauge needle was in the normal vertical position when the engine was cold (didn't notice it earlier) so I suspect that this is a clue to the problem.

Can anyone suggest what could be the problem?

hi phil, wheres the white smoke coming from?the exhaust or the booster heater?

the temp problem could be a sensor,im sure theres been posts on this before.

Hi, could the temp sensor be suggesting to the brain that the engine is at normal operating tempature when it is actually cold, so not switch on the glow plugs/correct fueling/timing, etc?

Hi, I now know that the glow plug symbol on the dash does not come on. This is my wife's car so I don't drive it very often, so I only get to know about all the little bits if information when something catastrophic happens. Does this indication that it could be a glow plug relay?

Help please..............

Phillip ...... does the glow plug light come on at all when you select to position 2 on the ignition? It should come on briefly and then go out before you start the engine. If not, try checking the wiring to the glow plugs as this is a known problem.

Could also be the temp sensor as suggested by Mick.

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for all your advice to help me sort this problem out. It turned out to be the temperature sensor that controls the temp gauge and hence was telling the brain that the engine was a normal operating temperature right from cold starting. Part now changed and all is well.

Now waiting for the next problem to emerge.

Regards,

Philip.
