bingo nightly Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 I am hoping someone may be able to help with my V6. The car runs just fine with no other problems other than it will not idle at all, making it undriveable as it cuts out at every junction. I understand that there is no Idle Speed Valve fitted as there is on other engine variants. So what controls the tickover? and how can i rectify it? I've searched the forum but have not found any answers. Anybody have a clue please? Quote
Stevoo Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Easiest way is to unplug your Idle control valve, it will be near the Throttle Body, roughly next to the Airbox. If the idling is the same when its unplugged then its at fault. You can try taking it out and cleaning it with carb cleaner. and spray it in your TB when car is running as you may have carbon build up.Check www.eurocarparts.com for prices Quote
bingo nightly Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 Thanks for the reply there, but as I said, there is no valve on this engine variant (or so I have read on here, and a search of the engine found nothing). So I have drawn a blank on this one I'm afraid. Quote
mk2vr6 Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 there is no isv on the VR, check the air hoses for leaks especially the crank case breather! then clean the throttle body, and try resetting it? Quote
Jack Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 When was the oil last changed? I had a similar issue and an oil change seems to have cured it. Quote
bingo nightly Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 Oil change effecting the idle? thats bizzare but who knows with all the sensors and gubbins fitted to the engine. Well it does need a service, so I have booked it in to a local independant garage to let them have a go with it. Quote

Any ideas where to start. check the intake system for air leaks? then try cleaning the throttle body, the butterfly can stick, also do a reset on the stepper motor, switch on the ignition till the ignition lights are on, but dont start the engine! leave the key in that position and you should hear the throttle body going through its reset procedure? during this DO NOT touch the throttle pedal! after a couple of minutes switch off and start the engine and see how she runs? Well as it happens, shortly after I posted the original question the car was due for a service so I let the local garage sort it out. When I picked it up later it was running fine and has been since (well until it blew up that is!). I recall they said they cleaned the throttle body and it did the trick. So I would follow the wise words of mk2vr6 in the post above and try that. Quote
