Hi everyone,

I hope to be a genuine member of this forum within the hour -depending on whether I buy the galaxy I've been looking at for a week, but NOW is the crunch time. However, it has some electrical problems. Apparently, the climate controls work but the compressor doesn't cool, the cruise control doesn't work, but I'm not fussed about that -however does it indicate another problem? The dash clock works sporadically, and the central locking works -but not remotely. Are any of these an issue? If I just simply don't use the A/C, will the compressor affect the engine in any way? Do all these little problems indicate a bigger one? How much is a compressor?

It's a '99 Ghia X.

Any help is appreciated...thanks!

well my compressor has recently gone t*ts up and i was quoted 800 quid for replacement,it is an expensive item to replace but only seems to work the aircon you can still use the econ function for warm air etc,OR it could just need a regas??????to get it to work correctly,my local kwik fit is charging 35 quid for a regas at the mo.

the central locking could just be a simple recode of the key to the car,THIS IS MENTIONED IN THE SERVICE BOOKS SOMEWHERE.

cruise control again could just be a vacume pipe that has come adrift or something else????

i hardly use mine so you take ur chance on that 1.

the dash clocks sorry aint got a clue on that 1

hope some of this is helpful.

Sounds like familiar electrical issues already comprehensively covered on this forum - if you search you'll find the answers.

The compressor not working will not adversely affect anything else, you just won't have A/C (so your mpg will be better!).

If it's a 2.3 petrol engine then the C/C is performed by an actuator on the throttle body. If it is a diesel or 2.8 petrol then it has the VW drive-by-wire system and the cruise control not working could indicate further electrical problems as it is all controlled by the engine ECU.

I assume you are not buying from a Dealer otherwise you'd be getting them to fix all these problems before you buy it. If it's a private sale and you're confident that you could fix these problems then get them to drop the price as much as possible to account for this. If you're not confident about fixing them then look around again - there'll be plenty more on offer in better condition.
