Step 1. Remove the bulkhead extension by removing the 3 x 10mm bolts. One at each end and one in the centre. Pull the drivers side out first and then the rest will follow...

Step 2. With this removed you are going to remove the the filter in the direction of the drivers side. Note: it doesnt matter about wiper position!

Step 2. continued.. You need a good light to see this. Disengage the plastic tang that holds the pollen filter frame.

Step 3. Pull the filter to the drivers side - watch you dont catch the wiring looms behind the wiper motor. The frame has a centre bar which can snag on the wiper motor on the way out (and in) - just use your other hand to help it round it. Once its over the drivers side it comes out easily.

So far its taken 5 minutes....fitting as they say is a reverse of the process..

Step 5. Refit the filter/frame - Tips on fitting:

1. Watch the wiring behind the wiper motor as you put the filter back

2. The centre bar of the frame snags behind the wiper motor - help it with your other hand.

3. Once you get past this point fit the rh side of the filter/frame into the housing and slide the filter/frame to the right and clip it back in.

Step 6. Refit the bulkhead extension:-

Be carefull not to tear the foam fillers at the sides!

offer the right hand side first, the bulkhead extension slides under clips at both sides but you will probably need to lift the centre with your hand while youre doing this.

Refit the three 10 mm bolts - take care not to drop them into the engine! (Like I did! :( )

Total time - about ten minutes.

Brilliant, Seatkid! Thought of compiling an alternative to the "Haynes" manual? Good pictures are worth thousands of words.

Nice one :( Now for your next topic may i suggest how to change the heater matrix on a galaxy! you can have mine to use for the photo's !

Nice one Seatkid :( can only echo all the previous comments of a nice job, like you, I have just changed a pollin filter; mine came out OK like you said; only had to remove the wiper motor; to get it back in as it caught in the centre & thinking this is going to be awkward :( but no dead easy only added a few more minutes to the job  .

P.S. Spotted what looks like temperature sensor near the wiper motor Does any one know what its for, ie frost warning / ambiant air temp;???? Looks similar to the one at the front near the bonnet catch.

The explicit diagrams are extremely helpful, but it highlights the fact my Seat pollen filter frame has a different design to that shown, the R/H lower corner is fully encased and the wipers must be vertical to remove it and impossible to refit unless the wiper linkage is loosened too. I agree the pixs are excellent.

Brillaint Seatkid, but that last picture, well it shows everything is so clean. Where`s the photo of the vacuum cleaner and vacuum hose in position cleaning the s**t out of there ? !! I looked at mine today.....it needs changed too. Well done.

You mean like the one below? A modified frame to alleviate the misting up syndrome <_< ....not sure if its fitted as standard to later models though. It looks as if the additional cover makes the frame a bit thicker at that end.

That cover at the end will snag behind the motor, but I would have thought the frame is flexible enough for you the persuade it to pass with a little hand pressure.

If setting the wipers vertical helps then fine but I can't see dealers loosening linkages..

Yes that is the one, and at risk of labouring a point, because believe me I TRIED and tried, I willing to bet the entire CasaPaulo family fortune for now and ever. You WILL NOT REPLACE THE POLLEN FILTER WITHOUT loosening the wiper linkage on my car. Furthermore mine is the last of the line before the new shape yr 2000, maybe the wiper linkage varies a bit in bulk too cos it's almost impossible to remove when the wipers are vertical, totally impossible if not, even then I gouged a untidy lump out of the plastic housing causing damage too.

I suspect you have the "additional foam filters (passenger and drivers side)" modification too. (Ford TIS No.160/1997) I can't tell too well from the Ford TIS but it appears to consist of bits of foam laid down on the bulkhead at both sides/ends in such a way as might restrict your access(vertically). These should be removeable...

Thanks very much for the excellent pictures, a great help !

My 1996 Galaxy was slightly harder to do, but thanks to all the discussion here, I managed to "encourage" the filter back into place. My filter box instructions told me to start by removing the cover my the wash bottle, this improved access slightly. There have been various modifications of the wipers through the years.

One important learing point while you are there CLEAN OUT YOUR SCUTTLE DRAINS, mine were clogged, hence the flood around my ECU, the auto electric guys say this costs

I think you mean the cover around the coolant expansion bottle. Early model covers here were more substantial than on later models, so you need to unclip these before attempting to remove the bulkhead extension. Later models they just tend to fall off.

With the bulkhead extension out, you have clear access to the drains (in the far corners) and no excuse for clearing out any debris or even carefully flushing through with a hose. We all know it could save a lot of grief later on.

By the way did you spot where the heater hoses were? (next to the pollen filter) - no wonder without a/c you always get warm air blowing through the vents particularly when its been stood a bit.

 AS MY YOUNGEST SAYS,

GOOD WORK TEAM..

SEATKID, WELL DONE MATE !!

I THINK YOUR SHOWING THE WAY FORWARD, FOR THE FORUM.

I WOULD NOT TRUST A FORD DEALER KNOWING THEY HAVE PRE-SET TIMES AND CHARGES, FOR EVEN THE MOST MINOR OF JOBS.

SA intruder - OK perhaps I should have posted a disclaimer and explained it was a Mk 1, what's different about the mk II?
