dazb Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 I have noticed in the last few months whenever the temperature has been cold, below 5 deg c. The timing belt can be heard slapping on the timing belt cover on top near the cylinder head. Once the ambient temperature rises or the head warms up throughengine running this dissappears. The timing belt was replaced 15k ago. Does anybody know if this is a coomon fault. Thecar is going into the garage asap, but everbody wants to change the belt. I am concerned if it is the tensioner or just tolerences when the engine is cold any advice would be appreciated. Quote
Guest mikej100 Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 Could be your water pump which unfortunately involves removal of the timing belt listen for a howling sound from around the timing belt either way get it checked properly cos when the belt goes it's bye bye engine. Quote
dazb Posted February 5, 2004 Author Report Posted February 5, 2004 thanks for the reply. Your info sounds correct. I was given some duff info , i was told the pump was external . I have subsequently found out that it is on the timing belt. The car is due in early next week. Do you know if it is expensive. a new pump the belt is 15k old will they want to replace it. I have heard that a new tensioner is worth fitting. I know its gonna cost but i might as well have it all done. Quote
Guest mikej100 Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Strangely enough my pump began making a noise right before i had the belt done so i had the rollers changed at the same time as the belt but didn't find out until afterwards that it was the pump  that was almost a year ago and the pump hasn't given up yet.It cost me 110 quid incl. the parts to have the belt done at my local garage and he did it in 2 Quote
dazb Posted February 11, 2004 Author Report Posted February 11, 2004 Many thanks for the reply. Ive had the car looked at and the water pump is ok. My local mechanic had a look at the car he had it for 2 days. they removed all the covers and checked the pulleys and tensioner and all was ok. They did not retention or anything as they would have had to replace belt. They came to the conclusion that when it is cold the belt slaps on cover. When engine warms up it goes away. I contacted fords parts dept. I found out on 86 models and higher an extended cambelt cover was fitted. Fords would not admit a problem but would sell me a cover for 62.50 plus vat. I live in surrey and my local ford dealer wanted to charge me Quote
Guest mikej100 Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Daz...didn't know that about the extended belt cover useful for the future though...how do Ford justify 82.50 an hour :o i have friend who works for BMW and they only charge something like Quote
