adrianf. Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 Ok, going back a couple of weeks i decided to change my four door speakers in favour of some Sony Xpod or whatever they are called. The result wasnt what i was hoping for.Yes they are better than the original ones but to be honest the improvement wasnt really worth the hassle of fitting them. They just dont seem to have much bass or treble and sound a bit flat if that makes sense. The head unit i have is the standard Scala unit which came with the car and my question is--------------is it any good.Im thinking about changing it but dont want to waist anymore money on this project.I have always thought that no matter what you put into the speaker it will only sound as good as it can with whatever unit you use or am i wrong (goog chance i am)So if i pop off and buy another head unit will it be any better than the Scale or have i just made a bad choice of speaker. Also thinking if i change the unit will i still be able to use the multi changer as most of the ones ive looked at in the shops have the single slot cd setup Sorry to go on but not really up on this subject so thoughts and opinions please folks. mumof4 Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 if it has a single slot in the head unit , but the numbers 1 to 6 on the front on buttons..then it may/should be changer compatable. Quote
Smilge Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 Right Ady ... there's nowt wrong with the speakers you fitted as I can vouch for them and I'm pretty fussy when it comes to sound and they gave the best clarity for the money you pay for them. The head unit you mention (Scala) is made by Grundig on the cheap to not only Seat but also VW and they are an average type unit that are made to suit everyone. Personally, I would ditch it and go for a more up-market head unit that use FET's (Field Effect Transistors) as part of the amplification stages. You can always check to see if the HU is compatible with your CD changer or even buy one of the many available adapter leads. Go for it mate. Quote
adrianf. Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 Cheers guys. The only problem i can see bleeno is the funds wont allow big spends at the moment so i dont want to ditch a crappy HU just to by a new cheepo HU.I understand you get what you pay for so i cant expect wonders if only forking out about Quote
adrianf. Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 Anymore thoughts guys and gals before i go and spend my hard earned cash. Quote
mumof4 Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 umm..yep, its late, im tired, lots to do, on the move, need to pack, kids do my nut in sometimes..ummmm..think thats it :16: Quote
El Dingo Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 IMHO Bleeno is right.I changed the head unit in a Seat Leon, leaving the standard speakers, and it made a huge difference.Personally, I tried Alpine (on the Seat - Quote
searcher Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Well ive tried to put up with the standard HU for a couple of weeks now but im not happy with it. Having spent the money on the speakers it seems daft not to do the HU also. Got a day off work Tuesday so a trip to the shops is on the cards me thinks. (Just realised i started this off in the MKIII section oopps) Quote
?Bleeno? Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 (edited) Ady ... do a google on this; Alpine CDE-9848RB. This is just what you're after I reckon and you can get it for under Edited February 4, 2008 by ?Bleeno? Quote
searcher Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Looks good bleeno, trouble is the funds are i bit more LTD than that.I had a look this AM and saw some nice Pioneer ones with 4x50 output and preouts for when i get my zillion watt sub :) for about Quote
?Bleeno? Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 I reckon it should be ok matey and if like the Galaxy the leads might be divided into two plugs, they'll still fit into an ISO connector ...fingers crossed. Pioneer's good ....... having pre-outs will save you a lot of time in the long run when it comes to wiring the sub up. You'll need to think about where you are going to route the power cable from the battery to the sub amp so it might be worth fitting pre-out and remote leads while you're fitting the HU save having to pull it all out again. Zillion watt hey?! ....... you'll have to drill some holes in the windows for pressure equalisation when its booming . ...... lol Quote
searcher Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Ok not quite a zillion.Tell you what he did have was a 300 watt in a tube with amp and all cables etc for Quote

searcher Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Well i bought the Pioneer today and first impressions is that its a big improvement. I need to buy an adaptor to allow me to plug the ariel cable in as its a bit different so hope that wont be a problem. Havnt bother with the sub as yet. Thought id wait to see how it sound without first. Quote
?Bleeno? Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Glad to hear that it's improved the sound Ady and I know the aerial adapter you're on about. I went back to Halfords and ranted about the same problem when my son bought a new HU and they gave me the adapter. So is the bass response OK? I'm still in two minds whether or not to fit the Alpine sub in the Mondeo that I took out of the gal because it means sticking it in the boot and I can't be ar**d to start ripping interior panels out of a car that's not even a year old yet. The sound is pretty good anyway ...... what do you reckon? Quote
searcher Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 Go for it. No point leaving it to collect dustOne thing i have noticed with the new stereo is that it looses the radio staions etc when the ignition is turned off.Im sure ive read about a live to the set for the memory but how do i go about this. The leads that came with the set were fine and ive now got the aerial adaptor and the signal is fine.A big big improvement over the old set so may leave the sub (for now  ) Quote
