Guest chunkyandlouie Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Firstly, as a "newbie" I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me out over the past few days. I now need 2 or 3 new tyres and have been amazed at the price variation - ranging from Quote

Guest chunkyandlouie Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Thanks, Gazza. I have spent some time today to get more quotes and have come up with these : 1. AA - Quote
Dave-G Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 All mick-fits will price match locally if asked...it's their way of doing buisiness :o They'll sell at a high price to somebody who dont know anywhere cheaper, unless a local lower price is pointed out  Quote
iainkirk Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 I just put 2 no. Dunlop 2020 tyres on mine this morning for Quote

Guest Andy Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 ALL kwik-fit tyre prices are the same at ANY depot, The difference is in the person answering the phone, There are the odd one or two persons working at these depots who actually think the prices are too expensive so they automaticaly reduce them 1:to get your custom 2:a simple tap of a key and price match etc pops up on the screen. It's not the tyres you gotta worry about it's the monkey changing it.... :o :o :o  Quote
grifjl Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 Our front tyres look about finished, 16000 miles. Backs look like another 30000 in them. I was going to get Nokian tyres fitted as previous posts said these Scandinavian tyres were some of the best, oh and they're cheap!!!! Quote
Guest chrisH Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 I tried Kwik Fit and 2 local independants, Kwik fit and 1 garage wanted to charge Quote
NikpV Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 I'm going there to buy a job lot and knock some out on Ebay!!! If we could all do with some, what sort of deal could we get on say 50/60 tyres?? Nik Quote
iainkirk Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 There seems to be a significant price jump between 15 inch tyres and 16 inch tyres. My price for Dunlop 2020 tyres was for 16 inch. I've seen Galaxies running around on un-reinforced tyres too - can't be a good idea - that would count as "modified" on your insurance and invalidate it I should think. Quote
Guest nimrod Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 The National Tyre's garage near to me has a sign outside which reads we will beat any price including Kwik-Fit's The last time i bought tyres Kwik-Fit were the cheapest! i even rang them back a couple of times to check that they would honour the price they quoted!None of the other tyre garages around the local area could get within a Quote

Ian, I've never heard of un-reinforced tyres - what are these? Something worth looking out for as some fitters may be tempted to fit them. Quote
NikpV Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 I think pre-facelift models used a 15 inch un-reinfored tyre, asked a bloke at work how much he got his tyres for and he was paying Quote
Taliska Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 My tip if you live in Hampshire is to ring Micheldever Tyres - always the best prices... Kwik Fit nearly always seem to price match them because otherwise they'd lose the business. Micheldever Tyres is like the McDonalds of the tyre business - you queue up and drive through and get fitted really quickly - the queues can get quite long on a Saturday morning, so beware of turning up late. They'll even supply tyres for earthmoving equipment - I saw one of these massive beasts standing up that had size numbers on it that were too big to be believable! As for tracking... I had an Audi that was only tracked once correctly in its whole life - that was done by William Street Motors in Southampton - can recommend them too. Taliska Quote
Guest Andy Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 Firestones are indeed a good tyre ,quite a good wearing tyre 195/65x15 RF Quote
iainkirk Posted February 6, 2004 Report Posted February 6, 2004 By re-inforced, I meant re-inforced side wall, as most of you will undoubtedly realise. Quote
seatkid Posted February 6, 2004 Report Posted February 6, 2004 I've seen Galaxies running around on un-reinforced tyres too - can't be a good idea - that would count as "modified" on your insurance and invalidate it I should think. Ian, I've never heard of un-reinforced tyres - what are these? Something worth looking out for as some fitters may be tempted to fit them. Models which run on standard steel wheels (6J x 15) specify reinforced tyres as opposed to a standard tyre. This is because the vehicle is too heavy for a standard tyre of that size (which is 195 or 205 section). Using an underated tyre will automatically render your insurance void and there are cases reported where insurance companies have refused to pay out. The 7J x 15 alloy wheels however use a standard rating 215 section tyre. The extra width of the tyre allows this. Some tyre places seem to be unaware of the difference between a reinforced and unreinforced tyre... <_< Quote
Guest Andy Posted February 7, 2004 Report Posted February 7, 2004 I doubt if any tyre fitter would fit an ordinary tyre and not a reinforced one due to the price difference,in saying that my tyres are not reinforced i have 205/60x15 only because i got 4 new ones for a tenner each, the load rating on the side wall is adequate though. The cheaper the tyre the quicker it will wear.... <_<   Quote
seatkid Posted February 7, 2004 Report Posted February 7, 2004 Much as I share your enthusiam for a cheap deal, your unreinforced 205/60x15 do not meet the manufacturers minimum spec. Your insurance company will take a dim view of this and most likely void your cover. Quote
Guest Turbo Posted February 7, 2004 Report Posted February 7, 2004 I agree Seatkid, you must fit the correct tyres as specified. The Galaxy is bigger and heavier than a normal type of car and therefore needs that bit extra in the sidewalls. Let`s face it, you wouldn`t fit standard tyres to a large type of van would you ? You fit reinforced ones as specified. Quote
Jim Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 The 7J x 15 alloy wheels however use a standard rating 215 section tyre. The extra width of the tyre allows this. Just asking to clarify. If the tyres are 215 width, then they do not need reinforced side walls? I only ask as my tyres as 215. The rear Dunlops are reinforced, but the front Continentals are not. Quote
seatkid Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 (edited) 215 section tyres do not need to be reinforced to meet the manufacturers spec - only the narrower tyres do (according to the SEAT 97 manual) Check your manual - see later posts.... Edited February 9, 2004 by seatkid Quote
NikpV Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 Interesting.. From p238 Galaxy owners guide " 215/55 R16 95 r.f. (H, V or W depending on engine performance) or in a winter tyre 215/55 R16 97 H r.f. M+S " According to this manual (2001) 215 are the ONLY tyres that need to be re-inforced al other sections are not (195,205,225) Nik Quote
