something i noticed this evening, the outside temperature was showing 10.5 degrees(so no aux heater needed)drove about 5 miles and the temperature gauge was showing 90 degrees, waited in a car park for about 10 mins and the gauge started to fall, went virtually to zero(i did have the heating on)drove off and the gauge started to climb back to normal, now when the booster kicks in the temperature gets up to 90 quite quickly and stays there no matter whether im stationary or not,so why is it doing this when the booster isnt being used?.

are you sure the booster heater wasn't working? the outside temp sensor is different to the sensor used by the booster heater. It could be that the outside air temp sensor thinks it's 10.5degrees whereas the booster heater temp sensor thinks its 9 degrees and so would have turned on.

differrent sensors have different sensitivity!

rusty, yes engine was running(but so was the interior heating).

sanj, defo booster heater hadnt turned on(felt the unit(cold)since its a brand new unit have searched on here for the correct operating sequence of the unit and it seems to be running as it should be.

The engine is still warm, the temp gauge doesn't start to move until about 70 degrees (probably more than that) as soon as you drive away it will increase rapidly to 90 degrees.

The gauge is only a rough guide between about 70 to 110 degrees.

Also the booster heater will not work when the water temperature is above 70 degrees ( or 75 degrees, somewhere around there ) regardless of the outside temperature.

You should be bloody grateful you've got a working booster heating, my old gals f f f f freezing.

Ok then,

Putting all the above together I would conclude this:

The engine warmed up during your drive, you parked so the engine wouldn't be generating nearly as much heat as when under load. The water continued to circulate heating the car, but in the proccess the heat exchanger would naturally be cooling the water so the temp guage would drop as per big kevs reply.

Once you set off again, the engine heating returns and so the guage rises.

Any good to you?

THANX PEEPS,did wonder about this,so to conclude the reason why the gauge dropped is because all the heat of the engine was being used to heat the interior of the car.

BIG KEV if you have read all my previous posts about the problems with the heater when i first bought the car AND THE F*****G hassle i had with getting things sorted out,you can see why im the proud owner of BRAND NEW BOOSTER HEATER,THAT COST THE DEALERS AN ABSOLUTE FORTUNE   :16: .

Gregers ...Rustys right. With the engine at idle you won't generate enough heat and what heat you had in the system was used up by heating the interior. I was surprised when I first bought mine and days of starting the car and waiting for it to warm up are gone. Most diesel car manuals actually state that running at idle to warm the interior is a misnomer and can even damage the engine.

The main problem is the piss-poor position of the booster heater temperature switch, it is in the scuttle panel so the engine heat makes sure it stays switched off if your sitting with the engine idling.

For winter why not remove it and put a 3A mini-fuse in the the connector instead, or if your really keen move the switch to the front bumper.
