Rusty Nail Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 Hi all. An easy one for all you experts I am sure. I am sure that I will be replacing my near side outer CV boot as I have just spotted a split in it (after spotting the grease). Is this an quick easy & cheap - Ha ha - job for Frauds (as I am booked in for a service and MOT in the next week) or is it easy enough for me to do and at what cost??? Hope you can help Thanks Quote
Beyond Help? Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 It is not difficult,Loosen the CV/Hub securing nut, remove the wheel, old CV boot, track rod ball joint, anti-roll bar extension and bottom arm bracket bolt. Unscrew the CV joint securing nut almost all the way out, but leave it in about an inch, then hit it with a mallet (no, not a bloody lump hammer!) to free the joint from the hub. Remove the bolt. Now making sure the drive shaft does not pull on the inner CV joint release the disc/hub unit from the bottom arm. Remove the CV Joint bolt and remove the joint/drive-shaft from the hub* again taking care not to damage the inner CV joint by pulling on it. Support the shaft on an axle stand or with cable ties etc. Remove the joint from the shaft by replacing the securing bolt and screwing it all the way in. The joint and shaft should now separate, but note the order of the washers/components. Inspect the CV joint and check the grease for contamination, clean and re-grease if required.** Put the new CV boot on the drive-shaft, and refit in the reverse of above, again taking care with the inner CV joint.Personally I would change the whole CV joint as they are sub Quote

Beyond Help? Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 The only 'special' kit you may need is a pair of nail pincers to tighten the CV joint boot clip. Other than that a socket set, a good jack and a pair of axle stands is about all you need. Quote
Rusty Nail Posted January 7, 2008 Author Report Posted January 7, 2008 Thank you 'Beyond Help?' As soon as the joints arrive I shall set to the task. I have all the required tools (jack, stands etc) as I have spent way to many hours 'fixing' cars and bikes over the last bluuuggghh years, just thought I would check re special requirements as I can't find my TIS CD at the mo.I shall update with my findings as and when.Cheers Quote
Comhander Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Got them very quickly but not fitted as yet - waiting for the weather - Garage full of other stuff!!. My car is just rumbling and has not given up the ghost just yet.I do not envisage any problems as the first reply to your original question seems to list all we need to know. Good luck. Quote
Rusty Nail Posted January 10, 2008 Author Report Posted January 10, 2008 Thanks comhander. I missed the delivery of mine yesterday, TNT promised to re-deliver today but failed, so after a moan I am meant to be getting them before 9.00 tomorrow - we shall see.If they do arrive, I shall try and fit them tomorrow and will let you know how it all goes. Just in case anyone was wondering - a new genuine Ford gater for the CV from the stealers at staff discount is nigh on Quote
Rusty Nail Posted January 11, 2008 Author Report Posted January 11, 2008 Update time. CV's arrived at 8:10 this morning, but had been repackaged by TNT as there was a problem with the consignment at some point. During this problem a tube of grease went AWOL and all the gater clips were bent. This meant onlt 1 could be fitted until replacement bits arrive. I set about the task in the garage which was lucky as it had just started to snow. The hardest part of the dissasembly was splitting the lower ball joint mount from the hub assy. It was only stuck but a bit of a pig to break free. Once all was free and the centre bolt removed, a supprising amount of water came out from within the gater. Good job I was replacing the whole lot. Whole job took just over an hour with cleaning up (that grease gets bloody everywhere) which I didn't think was bad for a bloke with a broken leg! One down; which is all I needed for the MOT, and one to go at my leisure. I would recommend to anyone that if a gater does split and there is any question of how long it has been split for, that they change the whole CV as it is less work than stripping, cleaning and replacing the gater and grease alone. So there we go. Tools used :- Jack + Axel stand19mm, 27mm 1/2" sockets18mm combination spanner5mm, 6mm, 8mm Allen key/socketBall joint splitter1/2" Torque wrench and long handle T-bar (155Nm + 90 degrees for the hub nut)Nylon MalletJunior hacksaw (for cutting off the old gater clips)Large pincers (for tightenng the Gater clips)Torch - 'tis dark under therePlenty of rags to clean up with. Have fun.. Quote
billywizzo Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 (edited) HiDid you have to remove the driveshaft from the car, or is it all done in with the shaft still attached to the car.Found my gaiter totally split and not sure if to just change the gaiter ( got a flexi one so dont have to remove the cv joint ) or do the cv joint.Cheers Edited June 14, 2008 by billywizzo Quote
