Charlie2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 Hi all, I have an '07 plate 2.0 TDCI Ghia. What I thought was a power steering fault developed at 12,000 miles where the steering, when cold, seemed to stick slightly. Those of you in the know would suspect a sticking spool valve in the rack.My local dealer checked it out and said that all of the Galaxies in the dealer at that time did the same. I have now covered almost 24,000 miles and it is booked in for its second service tomorrow. The steering fault is now so severe that, in very cold conditions, the first couple of turns it seems to have no power steering at all, as I apply more force to the wheel it suddenly releases, throwing me into a turn and almost out of my seat at times! As I'm expecting the usual "no fault found" response from the dealer, has anyone else experienced this fault? Should they not find anything I think the steering may seize, throwing me through the showroom window, they might change their mind then!! :P Quote
mumof4 Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 seems to be a lot of steering probs on the new mkIII at the mo. Quote
Saif Rehman Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 IIRC, i think there was a case when the power steering pump were being replaced on all affected cars showing these symptoms. Quote
wazza Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 My power steering has been making a whining noise which has become unbearable, booked in next week to have new pump put in under warranty. Quote
Charlie2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Posted January 3, 2008 Mine doesn't make any noise except for a thud when the steering moves and overcomes the resistance Quote
Saif Rehman Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 I would still take it back to the dealers to get it checked out - they may replace the whole thing. Quote
grahaml1500 Posted January 4, 2008 Report Posted January 4, 2008 Not sounding good for a new car, but i wonder if ford are using peugeot gearboxes. I ask this becouse i had the same problem with a peugeot 407, having taken it back to the garage many times to be told the usual "no fault found". Eventualy something gave and it was the planetary gears inside the gearbox, 1 broke and that caused my stearing to stick (more often when trying to turn left). This mite not be much help, but its a thought! Quote
Charlie2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 They've ordered me a new rack, lets see if that sorts it............ Quote
Charlie2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 Well, it got picked up by the dealer last wednesday, they wanted it for 2 days. on the thursday afternoon I rang them to check on the progress only to be told that Ford have told them to also fit a pump. 6pm on Friday it was returned and the fault has been cured. brighter01 Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Hi, Just taken mine out to France, and guess what...power steering failure. I have a 56 plate TDCi, and as soon as i got off the ferry, it went stiff to turn left. If i turned slightly right and then immediately left it was fine, but after a few seconds in one direction it would be stiff again. Slowly made my way down to our resort, and struggled with the steering, if you continued to fight the pressure to turn left it would 'pop' and turn freely again. Took the car into the main dealer in Soissions who diagnosed the problem as the pump, and then told me it would cost 890 euro's to repair....once i picked myself up off the floor, i told him to go ahead. (what else could i do?), and would sort the car repair out with 'the car shop supermarket' warranty department on my return. Any way... 2 days later and several phone conversations, the dealer could not complete the repair, they fitted the pump, but could not update the cars software to accept the new part. They replaced the old pump and disabled it, returning the vehicle with no charge. Leaving me to complete the return journey of 450 miles with a heavy galaxy without power steering. I have now got the pleasure of getting the car repaired again in the UK, but atleast i have piece of mind that the problem is generic, and atleast FORD UK should be able to complete the replacement. The only question now, is will Ford cover the repair as it is a generic fault with their pumps, or Car shop supermarket will have to cover, either way, i will not be shelling out any cash.... Off to email the Car shop customer services now...as they do not open on a bank holiday...TYPICAL! Quote
Neal 1500 Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 I have an 08 Ghia 2.0 TDCI. Last year at 13k miles it needed a new pump and rack. Now at 26k miles it has started over again. Knocking noise first, then power steering failing and needing the wheel to be turned in the opposite direction to return power assistance. Another new rack will be fitted on Tuesday by the dealer and it hasn't cost me anything but will I have to do this every year I have the car? Dealer said that when they rang to order the part the Ford guy at the other end of the line said Quote
