Guest mikej100 Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 Hi..my father in-law has a '98 OHV Ka that for the second time and dispite coating the threads with copper grease whilst trying to change the spark plugs they have snapped off in the head :) but this time i have been unable to easi-out the broken stubs and so have today removed the head and shall be taking it to my local engine machine shop to have them cut out but what i want to know is what can be done to stop this happening in the future...does Ford have a modified plug that should be fitted etc ? :)
Guest chunky Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 Absolutely nothing that ive heard of yet to stop them snapping apart from removing them and cleaning them up on a regular basis.I normally use a T50 torx bit and hammer it into whats left of the plug, then spin the engine over to make sure no nasties have gone down the pots. Its a bit caveman like but when given the choice the customer prefers the cheaper option
Guest ianock Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 I spray them with duck oil or WD40 & leave for 15minutes,then repeat the process a further 2/3 times.I tighten the plugs slightly then carefully undo 1 turn then tighten 1/2 turn etc etc...slowly easing the plugs out, obviously good quality(snap on/Mac)tools should be used.Haven't broke one yet..................I shouldn't of said that should I,JINX ;)
Guest mikej100 Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 Apparently removing them every 6 months and regreaseing them with copper slip is a good cure which is great if you own the car but when it belongs to somebody else and they haven't changed them for 30,000mls...different story, can't understand why Ford haven't come up with a more positive remedy.
Guest docker Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 hello people !!! yesterday my wifes KA spat the centre of a plug out while starting it. have tried easy-outs , but no look . tried a second plug & guess what ? please could anyone show or tell me how the head comes off. looks staight forward , but rather be safe than sorry thankyou to all in advance PHIL :D p.s. what gaskets will i be needing if any more than the head ???
Guest mikej100 Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Phil...these engines are quite simple and there isn't really anything that can go wrong if you have some basic mechanical knowledge.Get yourself a workshop manual to guide you through the process and help with bolt tightening sequences and torques and timing etc and it should be straight forward....you'll need to employ the services of an engine machinist to get the broken plugs out without damaging the threads and theycan even give the head a skim while they're at it. Hope this helps. Mike.
Guest docker Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 f-in-law's mate wich i didn't know is a fraud mechanic give it to him for a day . 30 squid later all 4 plugs out & changed , all is well. head did not come off, very lucky ;) thankyou mike for info though cheers PHIL
