unseen Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Recently I noticed my Aux Heater wasn't firing up on these cold mornings.. Didn't think much of it (until I froze one morning) borrowed a vag-com cable and deduced that it was reporting flame out.. Ok fine quick search brings "Glowplug faulty" fine easy peasy.. Bought the "enhanced" part from my local ford dealer and then it waited for a non-busy weekend.. That weekend was yesterday.. After following Ivors run through managed to get the unit off the car... THEN i hit problems... Firstly in Ivors walk through he shows 1 side of the "top" lid coming off relatively easily, then the back panel coming off to allow access to the glow plug... Hmm my lid won't come off.. It was stuck down by the other side.. oh well.. Took the back plate off.... ERK! wheres the bloody multiplug and glowplug?!?!?!?!?! Lots of head scratching... Umming arring, some choice words.. Back to the net with the model number in hand.. Eberspacher D5W-F.. Google finds a hit at SGA (?) a german gal forum that basically says that they changed to this new heater in Oct 04 (Erm.. But my car was registered in Sept 04!!!) and it's nothing at all like Ivors pictures.. On the new one you DO have to remove the water pipes (nightmare moment!) you DO need new seals (they break as soon as you move the unit :D ) Anyway.. Located what looked like the glowplug to only sit there and well swear after realising it ain't the same! :( So after much more swearing (and stressing with the water pipes!) put it all back together and gave up for 1 frozen night.... Ran vag-com again this morning and got these: 01414 Combustion Air Blower 16-00 Signal Outside Specification 01409 - Shareware 35-00 Shareware..(But a quick google shows this to be flame out?) I have a horrible feeling I CAUSED the 01414 error last night probably in the reassemble... I'm hoping it's just perhaps a peice of something caught in it or perhaps a bit of coolant on the wires? Can anyone at all advise.. I've tried Eberspacher and they put me on to a local diesel specialist (PF Jones) and they seem to think it's a GlowPIN not a glowplug in this unit?!?! (and it's another 45quid!!!!) Any help would be SERIOUSLY appreciated as I'm NOT letting this one get me! Thanks Rob and his cold 54 Plated Seat Alhambra.. Quote
unseen Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 Well bit of an update and a shout for HELP! (please don't make me beg!!! ) PF Jones (who Eberspacher put me onto) were very helpful and informative.. Unfortunetly the Eberspacher test tool (which bypasses the car ECU and goes straight to the problem) wouldn't connect as VAG/Ford (?) had used a connector they didn't have an adaptor for :( They did suggest if I can get the heater off the car again and supply the serial number they can order the glow pin without a problem. Quick question.. When I said "if i remove it i'd need to link the coolant" they suggested a temporary bridge using copper 22mm pipe? Would it be suitable and would it hold for a day or 2 (if i want them to diagnose the heater they can do it on a test rig but it needs to be off the car.. obviously  ) Unless anyone knows the exact glow pin number for the newer heaters? Thanks Rob Quote
gregers Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 im still waiting for mine to be replaced after many many months,(VERY LONG STORY)LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL)on mine they have linked the pipes together(im assuming)with a bit of pipe and jubilee clips(DO NOT USE SPRING CLIPS)they let the coolant leak out,as i have found out!!!. is your car is out of warranty?have you got a full seat history if so would seat not mend it as a goodwill exercise???? Quote
unseen Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 Hi Gregers... Unfortunetly mine went out of warranty in Sept... <_< Bugger.. But like you mentioned about a goodwill gesture I spoke to the spares dept at the dealer where I got the alhambra from and they did suggest speaking to the service bod when he returns from jury service! lol... Also annoyingly the last service it had (just before warranty ended) was my usual garage of choice rather than Seat due to cost/distance I had no leave off work left to drop it off/pick it up.. BAH!! So I will speak to them anyway.. but I think I'll plod on see if I can get it started in the mean time... You don't happen to know if they just used plain ol copper pipe do you? I'm thinking if they did then I've got plenty at home (renovations.. gotta love it!) would just need some jubilee clips.. Thanks Rob Quote
JohnR Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 yep, plain ole copper pipe and jubilee clips Quote

unseen Posted December 13, 2007 Author Report Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Will... Would you happen to know the ford code for the gasket/seal on that model of heater? (D5W-F) I'll try the eberspacher specialist as well just incase as I can't see them needing the bloomin serial number for that... (I Hope!) Rob Quote
