I have spent the last couple of hours scanning this forum and have been unable to find a car with similar symptoms as mine. I have an 2000/Xreg auto 2.3 - here is the problem:

 

When in Drive and with foot on the brake a strange whirring sound starts which gradually turns onto a slight grinding sound. The car is fine as soon as I take the foot off the brake and goes through the gears with no problem or noises. Also there is no problem in Reverse.

 

A mechanic has looked at it and determined that the noise is coming from the gearbox and has topped up the oil with no success. The mechanic now says that it is an oil pump problem and that I need a new torque converter and gearbox.

I have a slight doubt that this is the problem given that the problem started when the same mechanic recently fitted a new engine - and am now looking for a second opinion.
