Greetings

Just a quick question I am aware of a few Aux Heater problems but the one I have is when it starts up especialy on a couple of starts from cold it smokes very badly ie its what cruisers and battleships used during WW2 it generate a smoke screen ;) .

Is this problem cured through just changing the glowplug and do I need a number off the Aux unit when going to by one?

PS I got tugged by plod this morning who would not come over to me as they thought is was going to burst into flames!!!!!!!!!!! ;) .

Hi, Smoke... tell me about it ;) This is quite normal, but it should burn off after a few decent trips. I did have a problem with the after run pump not working on my mk2 which made the heater cut out early, so the diesel couldn't burn off. Try searching for after run pumps and try searching for motorcaravan man because he sells the glow plugs on eBay, cheap and quality.

Thanks you guys very much appreciated it is a while since I have been on the site for a browse and I know what its like on this site we all help each other out a hell of a lot rather than being ripped off by your local Fraud dealer.

I have just been out and plugged in the Vag Com and checked the Aux with the engine running as per a thread a while back, but it did not kick in albeit it was cold, fault codes 5 flame outs but it does not date stamp them never mind, also how many codes does it store?

By the way vwdriver what are the extra things to note please re changing the Glow plug as I have a rough idea of doing it re unbolt and remove cover etc with out having to disconecting the coolent lines??????

I will be out first thing in the morning with the Laptop when I start it up from cold and then fix it providing the weather is dry and no plod about when I nip down to the Fraud dealer with the FIN #. Hopefully buford_t_justice this is correct as mine is also a 2003 Tdi Ghia.

IIRC if there has been 5 flame out codes,then its locked out and will not even try to start,why not clear the fault codes and see whether it kicks in?

Thanks for that; question is: is this by clearing the fault codes on the VAG COM or do I need an access code?

Mean while must get the Lan / Hi Fi up and running to get a hard copy off the Lap Top.

Yes, just hook up VAG-COM, go to the heater module and scan it, then clear the codes. If it then fails five times in secession then most likely you need a new glow-plug. It is an easy job to remove it and test it, but the plugs are available quite cheaply now so if it was me I would have one on hand anyway.

I did my check this morning. Outside temp 10.5 did not come on engine on and off twice then it fired up loads of smoke but after I put the heating on recirc, could have been a coincedence.

check on the Aux heater block located it temp in burner indicated 305 deg C and the coolent pipe red hot Ouch :blink: but according to the measuring blocks neither the fan nor the pump where running.

Back to the drawing board via the Fraud dealer for a Glow Plug.

I've been reading the threads on the Glow plug in the aux heater on the underneath of the galaxy, I've got a 53 plate 1.9 Zetec TDI, and on the odd occassion it bellows smoke fom underneath and sounds like I'm parked at heathrow. As I've been reading the "Fraud" and almost experienced the full price of them they wanted

Mark ....... Is it steam or smoke billowing from yours. To be honest when I had mine I had no smoke or steam whatsoever from mine so I must have been one of the lucky few plus the glow plug had never been changed. If it is smoke then I would suggest trying to change the glowplug and give it a good decoke at the same time. The VAG_COM is used to reset the system as 5 "flame outs" will cause it to lockout. Other things that may cause this are the metering pump which is basically adjusts the amount of fuel entering the combustion chamber. You can usually hear something ticking away from the area of the glovebox when it's running.

There are at least two models of booster heater, the newer one gives out more heat. To do this they changed the metering pump and fitted a coolant pump. However the original glow plugs were still fitted. They can not always cope with the fouling from the fuel as the increased fuel dispensed cools the plug giving clouds of white smoke from un-burned fuel.

 

The main 'fix' on the newer units is to fit a new glow plug, as they are now a revised item that glows hotter quicker. That solves most of the problems. That would be the place I would start looking.
