Hiya All

 

Had my galaxy 2.8 ghia i auto now for 4 yrs without any problems until now ive notice that she gets to hot the gauge goes right up but not into the red before she used to sit just above the white area i only have to do 10 miles then have to put the blower on which reduces the gauge enough to get me home ive changed the stat and checked hoses would a blocked matrix cause her to overheat and are there any hoses inside the car any pointers you could give me would be very helpful

Dont think the heater matrix is blocked as it woudn't blow hot hair and the temp goes down on the guage when you turn the blower on. Things to check:

 

1. Expansion tank cap - Check you have a good seal.

 

2. Check for hotspots on the radiator but be very careful you don't burn yourself. Start with the engine cold and warm the engine while feeeling around the radiator. If you feel different areas of temperature then its possible that the rad may be blocked and reverse flushing usually sorts this out.

 

3. Get the system pressure checked for possible signs of the head gasket on it's way out.

Are both cooling fans working?

I think I read somewhere that one of the fans comes on at one temperature and the other when the temperature is higher. If so, perhaps the one that's supposed to come on at the lower temperature isn't working so it rises to a higher temperature before the working fan comes on?

Could this not be the dreaded water pump impellor problem??

 

My problems in this area followed a similar thread

First of all no heat coming out from heater unit

After a week of this the temperature guage started to creep up into the "overheat" zone

A few days later car was overheating

 

Inspection by Frauds showed that impellor had fallen off, however i assumed that it had taken a couple of weeks to do so, and in the meantime it was still pumping some water around the system

 

New water pump (+ cam belt change) solved the problem and relieved me of

had my v6 for around 4 years now and my temp gauge has always gone up near the red when in traffic. fans cut in and it goes back down. have replaced most of the cooling system trying to find a leak but the gauge still goes near the red. i have learnt to live with it - maybe it is just the temp sensor/sender. these engine do get very hot as there is not much room for air to circulate.

 

does yours go near the red when driving on the open road or just in traffic?

Have the header tank sniff tested. If it is not the head gasket (and most likely it will not be, the sniff test is the easiest first test) then the water pump has almost certainly stopped working correctly.

SO THE v6'S HAVE THE PLASTIC IMPELLOR AS WELL!

 

Well done VW Audi if that is the case for the most crass bit of automotive engineering since the Rootes group produced the Avenger or BMC the Allegro.

 

No wonder Ford have dropped this model.

My grouch is not with Plastic as such, but the method of engineering used to attach it to the pump shaft.

 

When I inspected my failed unit I was amazed, to say the least, that the original fitting consisted of a knurled cylinder to which the plastic impellor had been attached, which in turn seems to be heat shrunk onto the shaft.

 

I can only presume that the Knurled cylinder was heat shrunk onto the shaft and then the Plastic impellor was forced on the knurled shaft.

 

The actual connection between the two, on the plastic side, was now rather worn since I had driven some hundreds of miles with it inoperative.

 

The initial failure was almost certainly due to the differential expansion of the metal shaft and the plastic which caused the original bond formed on fitting to open and eventually fail.

 

The actual plastic impellor blades and surrounds were in fine condition and had not failed in the same way as a friend's BMW 2.5Td mounted in his Omega. The blades on his had broken with the central attachment still operative but the outer part now in the form of an outer ring no longer connected and forced to rotate.

 

On mine a screw thread of the correct size in a direction to oppose the rotation or a notched fitting would have sufficed to improve the mean time between failure for these devices to be such that it wold outlast the engine itself.

 

Perhaps Ford and Vauxhall/Opel have solved these problems.

Not sure if this is the same problem as my Diesel Galaxy, on high speeds and up hills the temperature gauge rises and only comes down if I lift off the throttle or slow down. Also the heater temperature is fairly cold unless the temperature gauge is near the red!

I don't know what to check or change, perhaps check the impellor, water pump or thermostat?
