Guest pet1963 Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 The engine was running fine one week then by the following week it had lost power and was making a horrible noise!Towed it round to local Ford dealer who did a compression check (77 quid!) and told me the timing belt had gone knocking out three cylinders and it was unrepairable! I think you need a better diagnosis...and I would not use the vehicle until you know what's ACTUALLY wrong. Go somewhere comptetent... I bet they didn't give you the results? It sounds like the valves and pistons may have contacted, but how is the question.. Quote

seatkid Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 :blink: Suspect yet another Ford dealer is a tosser. :P Engine is running so chain (even timing belt if there was one which there isnt) cant be broken - its a physical impossibilty. The camshafts are driven from the seven-bearing crankshaft through an intermediate shaft by means of two chains. The lower chain is a simplex roller chain, and the intermediate shaft is driven by the crankshaft.The upper chain is a duplex roller chain, and here the intermediate shaft drives both camshafts. The chains are tensioned by two maintenance-free chain tensioners. A hydraulic chain tensioner is provided for the upper chain and a mechanical chain tensioner for the lower chain.:P If the chain slipped a sproket - which I reckon is nigh on impossible, engine would be rough but damage to pistons etc unlikely. Maybe the tensioner has gone - is there a loud rattle? :huh: 3 cylinders out would mean engine is unlikely to run - certainly not idle. :unsure: Quote

An independent specialist would probably be cheaper, if you can find one who knows the VR6 engine.How do you know it was running on 3 cylinders anyway? Was it just "rough"? Quote

seatkid Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Agreed, Im inclined to think its probably an electrical fault (coilpack/leads/plugs) and just running very rough. IMO most engine mechanical faults are usually very terminal..(it stops dead) Quote
Guest Turbo Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 So, remove the plug leads or take the spark plugs out and see if there`s a spark while turning over or running (?) the engine. Also see if the pistons are moving. Can you view the plug holes closely on these models ? Anyway you`ll here by the air/fuel coming out the plug holes won`t you? Could the camshaft be broken? Quote

Even if a ford dealer didn't use the new apprentice to do this test, did they use the equipment correctly and do the right checks beforehand? If....the cam (or the chain????) is broken, then compression figures mean nothing. If....the cam is broken then whats the chance of 3 pistons being wiped out??? Engine still runs though!How do you start a V6 when one of the cams is broken????? Do you honestly think a (duplex) chain can jump a sprocket?
