A direct quote..........

Ford is working hard on, quite literally, the new black.

"Black is going to get more special and it's going to surprise and delight," said Susan Lampinen, Ford's chief designer for color and materials.

The new black will be used across Ford's line-up.

"We want to be the leaders in black," Lampinen said.

My Gal is solid black and the primer used is white so guess what every chip on the bonnet looks like. My Focus is sort of metallic pearlescent black and this does not show every mark or the direction you polished in that the Gal does. The solid black Gal takes so much cleaning and polishing to get it to look good, but it looks great when done. Needless to say, salt on the roads in winter makes a horrible mess of it, silver would be a lot easier.

The old Gal will probably stay in the garage for most of the winter unless the other half decides to go away for the weekend and we need to take the contents of the house just in case we need them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black

Black is the color of objects that do not reflect light in any part of the visible spectrum.

Scientifically, a black object absorbs all the colors of the visible spectrum and reflects none of them. This is sometimes confused with black being called 'a mixture of all colors', but that is not the case. In fact, an object emitting or reflecting all colors is perceived as white. Sometimes black is described as an "achromatic color"; in practice, black can be considered a color, e.g., the black cat or black paint.

Color or light in science

Black can be defined as the visual impression experienced in directions from which no visible light reaches the eye. (This makes a contrast with whiteness, the impression of any combination of colors of light that equally stimulates all three types of color-sensitive visual receptors.)

Pigments that absorb light rather than reflect it back to the eye "look black". A black pigment can, however, result from a combination of several pigments that collectively absorb all colors. If appropriate proportions of three primary pigments are mixed, the result reflects so little light as to be called "black".

An interesting phenomenon is that adding a "shine" or a gloss to a black object will create a black mirror which will reflect light and still "look black." For example a shiny black balloon will reflect a point source of light to the extent that if moved back and forth rapidly by its stem while shining colored lights at it the balloon will disappear leaving visible trails of light that appear to be laser-like to the naked eye. This effect was used to great success by "A Balloonman," named Gregory GOrDon beginning in the 1980's who entertained with it in various nightclubs including Studio 54, Paradise Garage, and Club Cheetah in New York City and The Melody Bar in New Brunswick, NJ.

This provides two superficially opposite but actually complementary descriptions of black. Black is the lack of all colors of light, or an exhaustive combination of multiple colors of pigment.

so is black the new black then?or is it grey white or red.

so does this explain why whatever colour plasticene I give the kids its a muddy brown colour the next time I blink, perhaps its a load of pigments doing a poor job of imitating black??

charcoal is not black its blacky grey,Graphite is grey and ebony is black

Hold on, I thought Grey was Whitey Black.

Does this mean

Graphite =Whitey Black

Ebony = Blacky Black ?

Charcoal = Blacky Whitey Black ?

Dark Grey = Darky Whitey Black ?
