mattc Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Yes I know it's another Aux heater question, but how long does yours take to warm up and how hot does it get? Just so I get an idea mine is working well.Cheers Matt. Quote
mumof4 Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Bugger..sorry thought you meant summit else. No idea as mine never worked. Quote
anadin Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 sorry i have a dirty mind also !! Quote
Saif Rehman Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 I know that the Galaxy's take a while to heat up, so my wife, when she's doing the school-run normally switches on the aux heater after about 3-5 minutes after starting. The air is by far warmer than that from the front. Quote
JohnR Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 The aux heater, if working properly, is pretty efficient. Mine will warm up to 90 degrees in about 5 minutes or so. Quote
Stevoo Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 mine works when i set temp to "HI", but mind you mine's a heater matrix and fan jobbie in the back, not an oil burning generator  Quote
big_kev Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) Are we talking about the Auxilliary Heater ( Booster Heater on Tdi's ) or the Additional Internal Heater above the Nearside Rear Wheel Arch ? Edited November 15, 2007 by big_kev Quote
mattc Posted November 15, 2007 Author Report Posted November 15, 2007 hi, I thought just as much. Yes it's the aux heater and I've put a new glow plug in, reset the vag com, get smoke, hear the jet engine and hear the after run, but the air coming out is colder than your breath(just warmer than the air). The heater exhaust is red hot but the other metal pipe is stone cold would this be a problem or I guess it's based on a matrix and water pump system, so could it be a blockage? Please help I'm freezing  Quote
big_kev Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 I would think if there is a blockage it would overheat and some overheat protection would trip it out pretty quick. See if the water pipes are getting hot ? Quote
mattc Posted November 15, 2007 Author Report Posted November 15, 2007 That makes sense now, when I did the old vag com a fault of overheat came up.Anyone else had this problem?Cheers Matt. Quote
mumof4 Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 Please help I'm freezing  I could knit you a jumper if you like? Quote
mattc Posted November 15, 2007 Author Report Posted November 15, 2007 Thanks Mum, but surely it would have to be huge to fit the Galaxy in  Quote
mumof4 Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 with my knitting, it would fit . lmao. Quote
big_kev Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 Please help I'm freezing  Is your heated seats not working....lovelly and warm they are on mine. Quote
tim-spam Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) Could be the auxiliary (electric) water pump failed. Edit: Or even the main water pump impeller. Edited November 15, 2007 by tim-spam Quote
marinabrid Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 the other pipe on the heater is the air inlet which wont get hot ,, check the rubber pipes in and out of the top of the heater , this is the supply that goes thru the heater , it goes in then out to the rear heater first then back to the engine, if its cold leaving the heater then it could be air locked or the pump not working . JohnR Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Matt, Had exactly same symptoms last year. At the age of your car, I can virtually guarantee that it is your after-run water pump. To check, just lift the hood when you turn the engine off. You should get a whirring noise that should continue for a couple of minutes after the key is taken out of the ignition. If you can't hear it, the brushes are gone. Buy a new pump for Quote
mattc Posted November 16, 2007 Author Report Posted November 16, 2007 Jesus John can you pick the winning lottery numbers next week for me... I read your thread on replacing the brushes last night and stuck some new ones in earlier and hay presto it works. Thanks for the genius thread on the after run pump and the hardest part was trying to get the rubber clamps back on to the bracket. Many thanks Matt. Quote
fosterman Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Heated seats....... you what !!! Big woolly jumper....that might do it. Very surprised, nobody suggested baked beans.... .......and the penny drops, although a quickie would probably warm up all concerned ( though would need to demist as well ) Quote
Alanuk Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 Guys, I have changed the glow plug in the aux heater, it fires up fine but it dosent seem to be doing a great deal to warm up the car, it must take about 10-15 mins to bring it out of the cold section on the temp gauge. Is there a chance that these run on pumps are fitted to the mk1 with the AFN engine? I cant hear anything running when the ignition is swithced off and have had a good look behind the fuel filter but the arrangement is obviously not the same as the mk2 in the picture. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I am literally freezing my nuts off on the way to work in the morning!! Quote
mattc Posted November 18, 2007 Author Report Posted November 18, 2007 Hi, Not sure on if the mk1 has a after run pump, but mine is a pump about 2"dia x 6" long with two ports for in and out.Hope it helps.Cheers Matt. Quote
marinabrid Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 the mk1 afn dont have a run on pump, this is the mk2 version only. if the heater fires up around a minit after starting the car and continues until the temp is normal then its working fine, if you turn engine off b4 its got to right temp then you here it winding down by the jet engine noise.i fitted a new unit last year and they all seem to work the same, the water gets hotter quicker if the engine is driven under load, if you leave it ticking over even with the booster heater running it still take 15 mins or more to get the needle moving though the water will have got warm to some extent.we have 2 gals , both with the heater working and they work the same. they aint miracle workers. the mk1 is fitted with a 3kw heater , the mk2 has a 5kw , maybe these work faster. Quote
Alanuk Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 Thanks for the replies mattc and motorcareman, yes it is fitted with the DW3 (3kw) heater, it seems to make all the right noises and I even notice the difference in MPG on the trip computer when its on, I was tempted to check the thermostat to see if it was partially stuck open but if you say 15 mins is about right for a Mk1 then I suppose I'm just gonna have to live with it (and spare myself from loosing more knuckle skin!!!). Quote
marinabrid Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 i swopped the thermo and it made no diff to the warm up time. this morning -3 in yorkshire , i drove 10 miles to work and the booster was still on when i got there. they sure do take so warming up when the temp drops. Quote
