Guest Shazza Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 The brake pedal on my W reg Galaxy is very soft, you can hardly feel any pressure on it when it's depressed. I was told by one Ford mechanic a couple of years ago that it's just how Galaxy brakes are, but I was told by another this week that he thought I might have a leak. The pedal has always been like this and I've never had any trouble with braking. Is this just a Galaxy thing? Sharon Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Keep checking the brake fluid level - that will tell if you have a leak. Otherwise suspect that it's just normal. Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I wouldn't describe the norm as soft. I assume you mean soggy? As in not firm when depressed? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I suspect "soft" as in "doesn't come to a sudden hard, full-stop", much like mine. (I'm also depressed!). Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 How odd - without wishing to sound contradictory (again!) other drivers nearly go through the windscreen....perhaps other 2003 owners would chuck their tuppence in? Quote
Dave-G Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I would describe my current and previous 2 shal's brakes as "soft and gentle" [like fairy liquid :P ]. On odd occasions that friends or family have driven them, they have remarked on this, as has Jeremy Clarkson[well i THINK it was him] with words to the effect of "great car if you like soggy brakes"  I also saw reference to this in one of the 'price guide books...parkers or what car. <_< Quote
MrT Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 On the current and previous models of Galaxy my brakes have been very good although my 1997 model went through two sets of front discs in its first year. They leave a lot of black sticky dust on the alloys. If the brake fluid needs topping up on mine, you would have to take out the air filter to get to it. Quote
iainkirk Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Two sets of front DISCS??? Surely you mean pads???? Quote
MrT Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 No disks. What happened was that above 70mph braking hard would make the car shudder and the steering wheel vibrate about an inch side to side. The disks kept warping due to some manufacturing or design defect. They were replaced under warranty. The excuse given by the (ex) Ford main dealer was that as the car was an auto drivers tended to keep their foot on the brake when stopped to stop the car moving off and this squeezed the two discs together at this point. Sounds a load of rubbish to me. Quote
Guest oscar Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 well my beast was all ok untill we put new pads in front and rear then the problem started with the spongy pedal or should i say the lack of pedal is there a special way of changing front pads appart from pussing the calipers back ??. this boy is going back to is mondeo 198.000 milesw never a major problem Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I would describe my current and previous 2 shal's brakes as "soft and gentle" [like fairy liquid :( ]. Dave G - IYour reference to Fairy Liquid reminds me - I once read about someone who changed his brake fluid and replaced it with washing-up liquid because it "looked like the stuff I drained out". seatkid Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 What about the guy that filled his engine to the top of the filler cap? He thought that five gallons seemed a lot..... :( Quote
