had my 97 1.9 tdi since last july, no problems untill now.

the engine cut out and i had to pull over.

after 5 mins it started again for a short time, then cut out.

it died once more and i managed to drive the 8 miles home.

it cut again on a short journey, the same day.

and now its parked up at home.

what is it??

dont know if this will help, but my 2.8 petrol was doing that, and it turned out to be a faulty speed sensor or controller, cant remember the exact name, cost

Crank Angle sensor dying throws.

Could be relay 30, but my money's on CAS.

They die with heat.

New ones not too dear, dead easy to fit.

i have been told that it could be as easy as a fuel filter needing to be changed.

is this a possible?

i'll keep in mind your other sugestions as well though thanks. <_<

Unless it's blocked completely, not very likely. Why would you suspect that? Has it been changed to schedule, and has a genuine filter been fitted?

You could have a fuel vacuum problem - in the form of a tank breather problem - easy to check by removing the filler cap.

You may also have an air leak in the supply lines.

Give them a thorough check together with the seals on the filter.

You could check all the engine related connectors and earths while you are at it....

I would agree with SA that it could well be the CAS on its way out. I would not think it will be the fuel filter unless something huge has wedged itself in there. When restarted does the engine pull as normal until it stops again or is there a loss of power ?

only thought it may be a filter as the car has been with me only since july.

and dont know if they were changed at some time or not.

where is the crank angle sensor?

had a look through the haynes manual, but must have missed it.

also relay 30?

thanks

any advice on what i may need to take or prepare for?

You'll need snow chains. Depending on your tyres, ordinary snow chains may not fit; I have 215/55s and few if any ordinary chains fit.

I hired Spikes Spiders from The Roofbox Co. (http://www.roofbox.co.uk/index.html); they're pricey, but they're very quick and easy to fit (5 mins start to finish) after you've fitted the mountings to the front wheels before you leave home (these stay on for the duration of your trip).

I believe that chains are compulsory in the French mountains in winter, and any way if you need them (we did), you need them.
