Saif Rehman Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Welcome Tony, i'm sure that your vast experience and knowledge will come very handy here indeed. P.S. Do you have to have a full licence to fly models aeroplanes or have i misunderstood one of your posts? Quote
galaxytony Posted November 1, 2007 Author Report Posted November 1, 2007 hi saifyes you need whats called an a licence you start off training with someone in the club who has a full licence and when they think you are ready the give you a test take off a figure 8 circuit then you come in to land and do what they call a touch and go which means you come in as if to land as you touch down you open the throttle and take off (they teach you to do this in case of people walking on to the flight line )then you do another circuit and come back in to land that then gives you your provisional whic enables you to fly without accompniment for about 6 weeks so as to give you practice you then have to take your full test without mistakes you also must have insurance which you normaly get when you join a club as planes do and have killed Quote
mumof4 Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Things have changed a wee bit GT , IIRC ( and it is silly time in the morn ) you can fly solo with just the A cert. For fixed wing there is the A,B annd C cert. Then there is the A and B for silent flight, and there are different ones for Heli schemes. Its called the achievement schemes...I havent heard of the 6 weeks rule between taking the A and B. Will have a gander on the BMFA website to see as myself i am only a beginner and dont have my A cert yet. If you have the B certificate then you can do competitions and displays, without the B cert you cant.from the BMFA website: It should be noted that it is stated in the Safety Code for Model Flying Displays that a model flyer, using a radio-controlled powered model in a display before the public should produce evidence of holding a valid 'B' Certificate. Competitors in BMFA contests for radio controlled powered model aircraft must produce evidence of holding a valid `B' Certificate. Insurance is usually included in a club fee or you can arrange it yourself through the BMFA, and you can get temp cover for 30 days , and from what i have read you can fly at a club for 3 days with third party cover when just starting out ..( if i understood it right.) sorry Galaxytony, cant see anywhere about a 6 week rule. http://www.bmfa.org/achievement/index.html johnb80 a member on here can answer any questions on this subject as he is a qualified examiner and instructor in this sport and has been a great help to me with my questions.Ill send him a pm and provide a link to this thread so maybe he can answer this 6 week thingy you talk about as i know nothing about it.Far as i knew aslong as you have you A cert you can fly solo, and only need the B cert for displays etc.Maybe a few years ago it was all different to what it is now. Smilge Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Welcome from me to Tony ..... Never really into model aircraft but have seen some awesome models in the past. I remember seeing an Argosy where the guy had built a ramp and a conveyor which he used to drop a load of Red Devil actionmen on parachutes as it flew over ..... fantastic! Look forward to your posts. Regards Chris Quote
johnb80 Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Hi Chaps, Chapesses and Mumof4 You're all wrong, mumof4 being closest. 1) You don't need any sort of license or permission to fly a model aircraft until you reach the heavy / large models 20Kg+2) There are no 'licenses' as such only tests operated by the BMFA / Large Model Association, the BMFA ones are referred to as Achievement certificates and the LMA ones certificates of competence.3) You dont have to have insurance (it is advisable though).4) Some clubs (mine included) require the 'A' cert as minimum for solo flying, if you don't have an 'A' you must have someone stood with you while you fly.5) There is no time restriction between 'A' and 'B' tests, in fact you don't have to take the 'A' at all, some people have gone straight to the 'B' ommiting the 'A'6) The 'A' test consists of : The examination for an Quote
galaxytony Posted November 1, 2007 Author Report Posted November 1, 2007 sorry guys i was quoting from memory as i said i havent been flying for about three years i must be going senial i had a good teacher at the time and used to enjoy flying with him but our club examiner was also a model shop owner and it was hard to tie him down he is/was a i think a world champion pilot he flew the big jets aswell as helicopters Ali Mashinchy Jnr was his name so once again i am sorry for misleading anyone Quote

mk2vr6 Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 license? we dont need no steenking license.... just pull up on the road side, find an empty field in the middle of no where, plug in the power packs and launch into the wind :( today we have mainly been flying, flyingwings :D cheap cheerfull, nearly indestructable, f'in fast and so easy to fly that I who have never flown before got handed the transmitter and told that lever does .... thats the throttle, it's nose heavy so keep an eye on it and apply a little nose up and you'll be fine :19: and off I went....... and yep it was fairly easy and great fun :) and if your interested? click the link http://www.flyingwings.co.uk/store/index.p...508139c16eba088 Quote
mumof4 Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Which one did you fly?..i have that shop saved in faves hun  Quote
mk2vr6 Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Slipstream 1metre :) fast as f'k and so easy to fly :19: stood it on it's tail around 20 foot up and hit full throttle, counted to ten and it was still climbing! couldnt tell how how high it was as it was just a spec in the sky! killed the throttle, flattened it out and tucked it's nose into the wind and it just sat there! took over 5mins to get it down without touching the throttle, it just glides so easy and if you position it right it will just hover in the wind  great fun, easy to build and maintain! just need a roll of gaffer tape and your done! should suit you fine :( the smaller versions RTF are just as good I'm told?
