This isnt your usual 'whats that thing under the car etc etc...

just letting peeps know ive changed the glowplug on my car... heres the good news, i did it in about an hour laid on my back so its not all that dificult for all you chaps that wont want to try.

anyway..

2 quick questions.

1 how and where do i bridge it to make it think its cold

2 anyone near me with vag com who can give me a quick reset on a few bits.. im between lincoln and scunthorpe.

anyway i will either have to wait till its cold or try again.

it just worrys me that i have done all this and its going to be something else as things very rarely go right for me with mechanicals... although i changed the plug in about an hour...

Sorry to far away to help with the VAG COM, from a reply I read earlier "Bridged the sensor wires under the wiper arms to fool it into thinking it was cold."

Hope this helps

open bonnet, look at the wiper linkage on the right hand side as you look from front. attached to the linage is a small bracket holding a small sensor with 2 wires. remove the sensor from the bracket and remove the wire connector from the sensor. then get a car mini blade fuse and put it in where the sensor was. this then bridges it and suppliers the heater with 12v all the time . i leave ours on all year as sometimes these heaters dont like restarting after having summer off.

i cant find anything around the linkage except a small black connecter under the plastic under the wiper about dead centre to the battery. this has 4 wires going into it but cant see any further from there.

next point i believe i should be able to hear a 'whirring' noise for several seconds after turning off the engine? i am not getting this!

should it only do this noise if its cold enough or all the time??

thanks.

2001 mk2 if it makes a difference.

Yes you should hear a whirring from the 'run-on' coolant pump, my Sharan is an X reg with just over 90k and the pump has become erratic and very slow and often does not work, I need to change it or attempt to repair it. The brushes wear out in them, if you look in the FAQ there is a description of how you can rebuild it.

but is that only when cold or when hot and cold?

i remember hearing it a while ago but dont remember hearing it through summer, my heater stopped working last year so i know it wasnt due to this.

maybe i am looking at a bigger repair then

While on the subject of aux heaters, I have a few questions which I was unable to find answers to in the archive :

1. On the Mk1's Vag.com will not communicate with the aux heater. Can anyone confirm if disconnecting the battery over night will clear fault codes logged in the ECU ? My heater is working ok at the moment so unable to check this.

2. Where is the best place to source the aux heater gaskets ? When it comes to changing the glow plug I will want to strip the unit and clean the combustion chamber.

i`m in peterborough if your near here any time. I regularly check my motor with vagcom and have checked the heater for faults not much more tho. I also need to repair replace the aux pump on the bulkhead if you go to b&q or Focus and buy some angle grinder carbon brushes these can be filed down to correct size. I think its all in the FAQ. Hi all, blimey i didnt see that region there no its the peterborough in cambridgeshire little place called Deeping St.James.Pop in anytime if you need to use the lappy and vagcom i dont understand all of it tho only the simple things.

The aux pump should run all the time but the real time you hear it is when you turn off and remove the key i think its on a 30 second timer and it circulates water to stop hot spots occuring in the head. Hope that helps

Noticed, a lot of people asking how to start booster manually. I've done it myself, took good day, but then i've got timers running as well, but in reality it could be done without even running extra wires, just put a switch somewhere by the rear left door. Basically all u need is to put switch between signal ON and +12v and u need to connect Pin 6(that comes from booster S1) to +12v. U can leave this connected to +12v at all the times, and now at the flick of the button u can start booster whenever u want. Should take no more than 1h to do !

As I'm new on this forum, I'm not allowed to upload pic's, but as soon as I'm able to do I could upload pics, and photos , and I'm sure even those that not in electronics would be able to do it EASY way.

Any questions let me know.

P.S. this is on MK2 galaxy/sharan.

Don forget, if you got climate control, when +12v applied to ON terminal (pin 7 on S1), all electrics will come on, like if u put and turn key to pos II, but not front or rear fans will run so u need to modify that, but this is getting more dificuilt....so enough for now

Good luck

just had another tought on the above, if the booster heater is started on the mk1 model the water wont get pumped around the system as the water pump is not running till the engine is started, so wont the thing shut down, i dont know if on the mk 2 the run on pump could be wired in to pump it round the system. any comments ? or am i confused !!

well isn't difficult to turn anything just by adding relay to whatever u want as in this case, to coolant pump, if power coming from the same power source ,

I mean no extra battery is installed to run the booster, then u just need basic non changeover relay, thats got to be activated at the same time as booster, but if in MK1s there is no electric pump, then that makes more problematic ,yet never to late to add extra coolant pump!, and it doesnt have to be made for galaxy or sharan, just pop to local salvage place or ebay, and sure can get that for
