Barlidge Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Hi, Hoping someone can help . . . I have a 2001 1.9 TDi with a 5 sped tip box which has started to slip on acceleration through all gears, mainly at higher revs (2500 - 3000 upwards), if you let the revs drop it seems to pick up drive again. Switching to tip indicates whichever gear is active is still engaged and am able to manually select all gears through tip but still loses drive at higher revs. I have checked the fluid level as per the forums and tis, a small amount came out when I took the level plug out, which was not quite black but very very dark in colour. (smelt putrid as well)!!! I am wondering if anyone else experienced similar problems? and if its possible that a fluid change/flush might sort the problem, I have spoken to a couple of gearbox places who seem happy to write the box/torque convertor/ECU off for varying amounts between Quote
rayc Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 If the fluids dark and smells burnt it's normally the clutches that have given out. I dont think changing the oil etc will make a difference. I dont know if these boxes have slip bands. If they do maybe they can be adjusted. I would also shop around for box rebuild prices. I know with American vehicles (I have an American van and am in an American car club also) that boxes have ranged from Quote
mikej Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) As you know already fluid level is crucial on auto box's but i have to admit based on what you say regarding the current oils condition i would be tempted to drain and replace the oil first before i started out on a spending spree , i wouldn't bother paying silly amounts of money for refurb either but simply look for a salvage box from a breakers if the oil change doesn't work , so called specialists are not going to say anything else are they ! they just want as much money out of you as they can get. symmy Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 which part of the country are you from?maybe some body in your area could recommend a garage near to you which has a good reputation this way you will know you are not being taken to the cleaners ! Quote
Barlidge Posted October 25, 2007 Author Report Posted October 25, 2007 Thanks for the the replies, if i change the box then i will probaly go for a recon unit, i think there is too much risk with a salvage box. Still not sure if to risk wasting Quote
NikpV Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 I am base in Biggleswade Beds, so if anyone has had a good/bad expericence with a local outfit I would be grateful to hear about it. Bruce I have used JR Fords in Shefford and the master mechanic there (Jim IIRC) seems to know his stuff but being a main dealer it wont be cheap Quote
Grumpy Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 It seems a fairly common fault with 2001 1.9TDi Autos, the gearbox is Japanese and unfortunatly quite expensive Mine started slipping last year (in 4th and 5th) and the box had to be rebuilt (fortunatly mostly covered by warranty), the quote had come in at Quote
jkspoff Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 I think this is a manual box : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GEARBOX-GEAR-BOX-FOR...1QQcmdZViewItem But gives you an idea of how cheap a box can be got for. Quote
Barlidge Posted October 28, 2007 Author Report Posted October 28, 2007 I have noticed that it does seem to be worse after it has warmed up, when first starting out it seems to be ok. Probably didnt notice this before as was normally starting out from home (when cold) and its all short windy roads for the first mile. Quote
