mrchipz Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 After just been advised not to use fuel additives by Big Kev, and thanks Kev for getting me concerned about this, what is the general opinion on fuel additives? Has anyone had any problems that can be put down to using fuel additives? Quote

rayc Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 I think it's down to personal preferences. I have used Wynns injector cleaner without side effects in the past and it has worked to clean what were most probably gummed up injectors. I have used total fuel cleaners and the like which have done what I have asked of them (Cleaned injectors etc). I don't use them regularly though (Ie every other tank). When BP ultimate first came out. I had a 525 tds BMW and that was totally transformed in the way it went. Not better economy but far better acceleration. However, I think the ploy was to get people using it and then cut back on the additives. As with most things. If you dont overdo it it shouldn't harm. Redex has been around for years. Although with the climate etc issues it's probaly not even the same as it was. Diesel Redex does have a Cetane boost in it and I have noticed a quieter engine after a few miles in my Peugeot 406 Diesel. Is it psycological? Dont think so. It's an old debate that will probably gone on when we're all pushing up daisies (Oh yeh. Wont be any fossil fuel by then!) If cars do regular long runs they'll probably not benefit. If you do short runs where the soot isn't burnt out it may well help keep it clean! There's my two penneth :( Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Virtually all fuel (both petrol and diesel) sold in the UK will have detergent additives in it. Exceptions are most likely to be (but not limited to) small independent outlets. ALL main brand (Shell, BP, Esso etc) and mainstream supermarket fuels use additive packs which are put in the fuel as the tanker is being filled. The additive packs are different depending on which brand you use, but will include a detergent. The refinery near to where I work will see tankers from several different oil companies and supermarkets come and go, and I know that the dispensing point has additive pack dispensers from rival as well as for their own brand. The likes of BP Optimax diesel, and the similar equivalents from others will and do have a higher specification additive, including more and /or better detergents, and can be a good thing especially when coming up to MOT's when smoke gets measured. For what it is worth, I did see a small improvement in economy when running optimax, but not enough to justify its higher cost. Note: Unlike the UK, visitors to France and Spain should be aware that there is a definite 'split' between main oil companies and supermarkets. Main oil company supplied fuels are very close to 100% with additives, whereas supermarket fuels are almost always without them, as it lets them sell the fuel at a lower price. George. Quote
me myself and I Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Note: Unlike the UK, visitors to France and Spain should be aware that there is a definite 'split' between main oil companies and supermarkets. So maybe this is why my jeep started to get reeeaaaaallllllyyyyy smokey after 2 weeks of filling up in French supermarkets for my trip down to SW France but was nowhere near as bad when started to use branded diesel when I got back home Quote
barryorba Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 spanish fuel has next too no addatives, except for our local gasolina, they recently had a diesel spill, to deal with this they opened the main tank ,. and swept it back in , dust and all. needless to say there are not many cars running around here at the moment.the only activity is with the local solicitors, the garage owner is denying all responsibility, manana, manana.
