chromedome Posted October 19, 2007 Report Posted October 19, 2007 Had the Galaxy serviced today at a Ford Main Dealer and was advised that the tracking was out and both front tyres had worn badly on the inside edge, down to 1.0mm. As it was on the inside I didn't notice it. The car has Michelin Pilot MXM tyres fitted so I wanted to keep the same make. Rapid Fit, on the same site as the dealership, wanted Quote
ianskill Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 i was told not to use extral load tryes but infact reinforced. i know extra load tyres are used on vans for the sake of weight,so to me it shouldnt make any difference, dunno what anyone elses views on this are. Quote
mumof4 Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 extra load is like reinforced so i don't know why you were told that. Quote
Sher Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 extra load is like reinforced I'm sure this is the case. My criteria is in fact the Load rating. My original fitment was a Pilot MXM with a LOAD/Speed rating of 97H . After the 2nd pair started wearing and wet grip has always seemed less than I expected, I was unhappy with them Though on previous cars I was satisfied with them. I am now on 2 new Falken 97W with 2 in the shed (at Quote

You'll see the term 'reinforced' less in future. Manufacturers are moving away from using 'reinforced' and instead calling the tyres XL as it more accurately reflects the only difference from standard tyres - and to save confusion with RF run-flat tyres which do have reinforced side walls, but do not carry the higher load index rating necessary for heavy vehicles. XL tyres simply have an increased load index compared to the standard tyre. As Sher says, the important thing is the load index, which should be an absolute minimum of 94 for the Galaxy. Any 95+ rated tyre in 215/55x16 will be reinforced or XL, the standard load index in this size is 93. C-rated 6/8 ply tyres for vans are of a different construction again, and load indexes are higher than XL tyres. Quote
chromedome Posted October 20, 2007 Author Report Posted October 20, 2007 The factory fitted Michelins have Extra Load stamped on them. Quote
ianskill Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 (edited) just goes to show some of these tyre garages dont always know what they are on about.i have 2x extra load pirelli fitted on mine and was told wrong tyre. this guy told me reinforced and extra load are 2 completley different tyres, lol. he wont even entertain part worn, inner tubes or puncture repairs. he said this is dangerous and aint worth anybodies life. i know most if not all garage do puncture repairs and is legal in the tread area. i wounder how much business he generates, lol Edited October 20, 2007 by ianskill Quote
big_kev Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 he wont even entertain part worn, inner tubes or puncture repairs. he said this is dangerous and aint worth anybodies life. I agree with him on this, remember that tyres are the only part of the vehicle to touch the road ( hopefully ) and all braking steering and suspension is very reliant on them. If in doubt new tyres....a blow out ( especially on the front ) is not very nice.....been there done that....don't wish to do it again. Quote
