can anyone help. Got a 2.8v6 auto 1997.

It missfires, but its not the plugs or ht leads. Its irregular.

Also, I'm convinced there is a linked problem with the electrics

ie. lights dim on tickover, but just replaced the alternator. In drive when stationary there is a lot of missing and vibration from gearbox, dont know if this could be linked too.

niether ford not vw could pinpoint it with diagnostics.

I could do with some suggestions

cheers vinny

When did it start, and did it follow any event, addition or replacement?

Was it after a service, oil change?

I bought the car last July, and noticed it had a slight missfire then, but it didnt worry me, i put new plugs and leads on thinking that would cure it, but it didnt.

Its got worse since then. I dont know if the light were dimming in July, its not easy to detect unless our looking for it, quite slight.

the miss is quite noticable on tickover, but when driving it isn't.

Main problem is, it has an LPG conversion, and the miss is apmlified greatly on gas

to the point where its very hard to pull away and stalls alot.

Also check for air leaks around the intake system.

Had any backfires?

Hi vinny,

i had a similar problem with mine, ran ok on gas but terrible on petrol, noticed Dave G's comment ref rear brake lights, is your offside rear brake light working ok? if not, rectify. My bulb had blown, changed bulb then engine ran ok after that.

Your gas system is it injected or is it attached to the air intake pipe ( in which case you will suffer from back fires regular )

Good luck

The bad running on petrol sounds like dirty injectors, due to running a hot engine without anything running through the injectors. Try some injector cleaner, then run on petrol for a few miles.

Only had one backfire on gas, when I was getting used to it and the auto LPG switch went over on a full throttle gear shift! sounded like a bomb, but my airbox has a pop off valve to save the system. Now I just blip the throttle once after I start up to switch over. If you've got a Sh*t hot ignition setup, with good resistor leads, you shouldn't get a misfire.

Running on gas and backfiring somehow conjures up visions of Jonesy's van on Dad's army with the big gas bag tied the on top!

seatkid, your closer to the truth than you think

tried injector cleaner, no joy

lpg is sequential injection system

only backfires on lpg, not petrol

misses on both but far worse on gas

i think its an electrical fault, i mentioned dimming of dash lights and

also radio cuts out when indicating sometimes, cant help thinking everything

is related, but dont know where to start with electrics

at moment its sucking air bad, seeing as it backfired a pipe clean off never to be seen again
