Hi,

This is my first time posting a message here. So glad I found this site, have read through hundreds of posts but can't find the answer to our problem.

We bought a galaxy auto 2.8 v6 (R98) recently. The problem is the gearbox being in limp mode. When we bought it the man told us he'd had diagnostics ran twice on it and it 100% wasn't the gearbox, he'd tried fixing the problem by eliminating possible causes but didn't have the time to spend on it any longer. The car is 4 speed i'm told and would only get to 30m.p.h second gear then would go into neutral gear.

We've taken the car to a garage that specialises in auto gearboxes and he has taken the gearbox out and fixed something that had sheared off between gears I think he said, not the teeth but this whole part. Now that is fixed he took it on a test run and we now have 3rd gear but no fourth still. He's tried the wiring loom and absolutely everything and he cannot work out what the original problem was that caused the gearbox to go in limp mode. The man we bought it from suggested that it needed a throttle body. Does anyone know if this could be the problem.

Please help as the last estimate on costs so far was

hi, gearbox probs are mostly the gearbox ,and the best way to go is pickup a good gearbox from a local breaker then find some one to fit it for you for a good price if you cant do it yourself.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. We've had the gearbox fixed by a specialist it's still with them now. He's repaired all the damage inside and put it back in. He's ran tests and the gearbox is working ok now. The problem that he can't work out is why the gearbox get's the message that it's in gear a split second late and this is causing a electrical fault to come up.

hmm could be lots of things could be somthing sticking in the gearbox this would probly not show up on any tests or could be a faulty sensor.

but would have been better for diagnostic reasons and cheaper to replace the gearbox, diagnostic machines and tests dont allways show the faults.

Just some thoughts.....

Does it work in manual?

I would hazard a guess that the problem might be a slow or sticking solenoid valve in the control block on the auto box. If the gearchange is too slow, the engine ECU will think there is a fault. Can the control block be stripped and flushed clean?

Could also be a faulty or incorrectly adjusted sensor, or a worn or incorrectly adjusted brake band.

According to HJ recon Jatco gearboxes are available from

Gosh do i wish we'd just replaced the gearbox. It would have worked out so much cheaper. The specialist we took it to advised us to get it fixed not replaced as he said a new one might not have married up with the electrics. Just got of the phone with him he says the diagnostics are showing that there is a imcomplete fault showing with the air mass sensor but it won't say exactly what is the problem. The man has said it's probably best if we get a throttle body (second hand) and hopefully this will fix the problem. This car has turned into a nightmare to get fixed even the man at the garage is baffled with it.

Blimey..if they guy is baffled, and isnt sure that a replaced throttle body will cure it..its going to cost you a shed load of money till he gets to the bottom of it..It may be worth calling the peeps SK suggested and see what they say.

Hi just noticed the last reply from seatkid, thanks for the reply. It didn't work in manual either when I tried before we took it in. The man has replaced the sensors, solenoids and changed the wiring loom. He's also secured all the wires/pipes? onto the throttle body to make sure they are not leaking. He said he's checked just about everything. Ordered this throttle body so I just hope it's this that is the problem as I can't afford spending anymore on it

I cannot see how a MAF or thottle body can trip an autobox fault. You would be wasting

Thanks for the last two replys. I know the "specialist" doesn't seem a specialist does he! There's only a couple of places in leicester that will do auto gearboxes and he was one of them. He wouldn't give us a quote until after he'd done the work. He did the diagnostic on it which brought up something between 3rd and 4th gear to do with pressure I think. He then said it was upto us whether we got a recon gearbox or he fixed the old one in it but that a new one might not match up with the electrics which could of cost more in the long run. We decided to let him fix it but he couldn't say how much it'd cost only as a rough guide between

Umm..ive never heard of a quote untill hes done the job line before!!..if i were you..id go elsewhere..ring the place SK said...me thinks you are being taken for a ride here....and to be honest if i were in your shoes id tell him thanks but no more youve spent enough with him..he doesnt know whats wrong and you want to get a second opinion.Dont let him do anymore work on it as you have no idea how much its going to cost you !!..i have a feeling that you are being fleeced...If the car is driveable..take it away from there and start ringing round..

this is only my opinion. But after spending over a thou on it and prob still there...then he obviously dont know what the heck he is doing or is genuinely baffled and you need to find someone who will know.Ring the peeps SK pointed out.Ive provided their details below

Identifying your Unit

If you have a four speed autobox there are several different types. To identify this further we will need the identification number, which is on the left-hand side behind the selector rod, on a 3 x 9cm nameplate. We are interested in the second number from the top, the number will begin with 1043 and are followed by six further numbers, i.e. 1043 010 744 We need to know the last three numbers. Click here to see a video showing this number.

Common types of 4HP22 are, 332, 593, 699, 740, 741, 742, 744, 747, 748

The 4HP22EH or 4HP24EH will end in 061, 065, 727, 728, 759, 763, 764, 765, 766, 767, 768, 769

If i were in your shoes id look elsewhere.

I can understand to a point about not giving a quote until he has had a look at it. To be fair hes got no idea what hes going to find until he opens it up.

But over a grand and no result isnt on.

might be time to call it a day m8 and cut your losses if you dont want to spend any more cash on it,just put it in your local car auction like everyone else does with costly broken motors, Edited by angusuk

Thanks angusuk, adrianf and mumof4 (me too, a mum of 4 that is) for your reply's. Had to drive to lichfield today as the post is on strike to buy a throttle body from 'Just Affords' (very helpful ford scrappy) and took it to the man at the garage. My partner thinks the man at the garage is having us over too he's really not pleased and wouldn't even smile at the man today. The man reckons he's genuinely baffled and although he's done hundreds of galaxy's this is the first 4x4 he's done and that he's even rang around mates all over the country in his line of work to ask them. He had an electrician there today to do a pinch check he said to see if it brought up the same results he's got. He's saying that if the throttle body doesn't work then next it's to change the wiring and if that doesn't work then it's the gearbox ecu. I will see if the throttle body works and then that's it. I will call the people suggested by SK and mumof4 to ask there opinion. Thanks again

Ring them today.....dont wait. That way you can be armed with any info they may be able to give you...Hmm..reckons hes done hundreds but yours in the first 4x4??

Going to sound daft here, but was it you or your partner that first took the car in??

Hi mumof4, we both took the car to the man I know what your maybe thinking because i've had that in the past, garage's trying to charge me more because i'm a woman (they see a pretty woman and always think i'm dumb it's quite funny seeing their faces when they realise I know a bit about cars). My partner's quite a big man so the man at the garage would be pretty silly if he is trying it on with us. Since I rang the man and my partner did too and explained we havn't got a bottomless pit of money he has said he'll try to keep down the cost as much as possible. Going to ring him soon to see how he's getting on with the throttle body then will call the number you and SK suggested to get some more info on it. Cheers

 A phone call costs pence and takes a matter of minutes. Many people will give advice for free.....USE IT!

You seem reluctant to seek someone elses opinion, you will and have paid dearly for the "head in the sand" approach.

Phone now!!

Seatkid is right, ring them...youve spent over a grand on this car already .. i dont understand why you are hesitating on ringing for advice?? when the guy who has your car admits he doesnt know!!..its madness. We are trying to help you here....

Hi

just replying to SK and mumof4. I'd already rang ford and another company but without seeing the car couldn't give much help. Ford also knew the garage where our car is and said he's normally quite good (ha that's a joke)Rang the people SK suggested last week they wasn't available so i rang another auto gearbox specialist not far from the one SK said in luton. Have also rang another 2 companies to ask their advice all said without seeing the car couldn't help very much. one asked for the fault codes but the man at our garage wasn't in or available everytime we called last week.

We eventually got hold of him and he'd fitted the throttle body we bought. When we suggested the throttle body to him before he said oh no that's not it.... fitted the throttle body now he says the old one wasn't talking to him through the diagnostics and the new one does! Now he says there's a problem with the electrics between the engine management ECU and the gearbox ECU. He said the electrician was coming friday to find the fault with a pin check. Got hold of him saturday the electrician hadn't been! My boyfriend rang him today now it's the gearbox ECU. We've now got to go to Lichfield again tomorrow to fetch one from the same scrappy as last week. Also even though we put a new battery on when we bought it last month he says there is 18volts instead of 12volts going through now so the battery won't hold the charge and he reckons that could have blown the ECU. It drove and worked when we took it there it was just stuck in limp mode.

I've also rang the consumer advice people as I called another Auto gearbox garage today and they suggested getting legal advice as it's now 4 weeks they've had the car and all we've got is more problems. Apparently we have to write him a letter giving him 10 days to fix the fault or we want the cr back. Also went to see the police to ask if he's allowed to keep our vehicle and yes he is until we've paid him for messing up our car more than when it went in!!!! Really had enough with it all now and there's nothing we can do about it.

mikeohope is our resident expert in things like this, as gregers will testify.

try emailing or pming him with a link to this thread and see if he can offer any advice which may help you

unfortunately as far as i am aware (though i may be wrong), he is entitled to keep your car untill you cough up.
