I know it exists, I've found the wiring diagram on my new Gal CD. I've also checked the FAQ's (no b*llocking due here then!) and no info. So; how do I access the the gear shift status legend to replace the bulb pleeeeeeeeze? Once this has been done, everything electrical, and I mean everything, will be working, for the time being anyway.

undo the screw shown in the picture... i think you need an allen key.

Then, the whole gearstick lever should come off.

Now, if you can thke black piece of plastic out by forcing flat screw drivers around the edges (the one which has the P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1 markings on it) then do it .... this will give you access to the bulb underneath.

Otherwise, take the ash tray out, and then take the ash-tray holder out. This will give you access to black screws, 4 i think, two are show in this picture.

Once all the screws are undone, you should be able to maneuver the whole cream plastic part to the side... !Mind the VAG-COM socket! (the pink thing)

Now from underneath, you should be able to puch out the black plastic which'll give you clear access to the bulb underneath.

ahh haa, found more info clicky me

When you come to remove the U shaped thing, make sure you get a good workout at the gym beforehand... I couldn't get it out!

Thanks, hmmmmmm! looks like a job you could start and wish you hadn't - I've done plenty of them! But I'll probably give it a go in the morning.

the only main problem you'll have is getting the mechanism off, it's downhill from there. (try not to break the green plastic which gives the bulb its green light)

also, vw seem to be cheaper for parts.

When I changed mine, I got a Green Bulb from Halfords. I twisted my old bulb side to side and pulled it out. So the to wires left in the plastic holder were sticking up. I then postioned the wires off the new green bulb and lined them up with wires In the plastic holder. I pushed the bulb In firmly with the Ignition on. Once light came on I put some sealant glue to hold bulb in place. Year on and still working lol

iirc i got a 4watt bulb which is much brighter.
