big_kev Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 Came accross this report......interesting. http://www.yes-but.net/cycling_is_1dangerous.html I knew I was right ......nutters the lot of them. Quote
mumof4 Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 You will find that some schools will only allow children to ride their bikes to school only if they have passed the cycling proficiency test.My kids last school did this but i think this one they attend now doesnt. It should be implemented in all schools to make children more aware of the dangers on the roads.Yesterday i passed a lad cycling towards me on my side of the road with no helmet or safety gear on.Accident waiting to happen. Children are the most vulnerable on bikes, unpredictable, harder to see and quicker than some adults. You will find that kids are given bikes..taught how to ride..but not always taught how to ride safely..there is the problem. They are bought all the safety gear...but not taught road awareness. As with most things, adults are responsable for their actions ..children have to be taught how to cycle safely. That website pointed out all the negative stuff..but there are good cyclists out there who do obey the laws of the road..Not many..but there are some. Oh by the way..edited the topic title. Quote

Boozynights Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 There is another side to this. We go out on a Sunday on our bikes, I tow the 2 youngest in a trailer (hard work!) anyway we use a local cycle route and some of it is on a main road with a so called cycle lane. You will be surprised the number of numpties who park their vehicles in this lane despite it being double yellow lines, this forces us out into the middle of the road and into the path of fast traffic - just needs a bit of common sense I think. I do however also get annoyed when in the car trying to overtake the local cycling club who are out in force and riding 4 or 5 deep taking up all the road, this too is not very courteous. Just my opinion  Quote
Bigjeeze Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 I agree - There is a small minority of cyclists who take the attitude that they have more rights on the orad than other road users - That aside you just have to take care! Quote

Yep, agree with this. These same numpties also park on footpaths blocking them and forcing the pedestrians out into the road.Lack of police on the beat...all too busy doing speed traps. Yeh, cycle clubs....don't get me started... 1: you must not ride more than 2 abreast....single file only when going around bends or on narrow or busy roads ( spot the flaw in this statement ! .......define narrow or busy road ? )......In a survey 85% of cyclists said they knew about this....and 10% said they were unaware...2% disagreed with this....the other 3% said that the highway code was just for motor vehicle. In the same survey 96% of cyclists said they ignored the highway code anyway. 2: Road Racing......breaks nearly all the rules in whole highway code yet you see bikes doing it all the time ?Try doing this with fifty Golf GTis on a dangerous country road and see how far you get before the Traffic Taliban have you. 3: Highway Code....144....You must not drive without reasonable consideration for other road users.... Sorry I think I've wet myself on this one. big_kev Posted October 5, 2007 Author Report Posted October 5, 2007 I live in a very "horsey" area. Most of the horses and riders I find to be ok....have them rather than cyclists anytime. Quote

stevic Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 I think we all have to take a look at the behaviour of all road users, there are good and bad in every category. I cycle about 1.5k miles a year, drive an artic 80k miles a year and drive a car about 20k miles a year. I have some strong opinions about all road users!!! :D Young cyclists in particular are becoming their own worst enemy with the careless way they cycle on the pavements completely ignoring pedestrians, a lot of young cyclists have no manners in any type of situation, so why would it be any different when they're on a bike? Their attitude to traffic regulation also appears to be non-existent. But for us well mannered cyclists ;) the biggest threat is the busy period between 8:00am and 9:am. With mums on the school run being the worst offenders; they just drive straight at you! A flimsy polystyrene helmet's going to do a lot of good if you get hit by some mad woman trying to make up lost time because little Johnny forgot to pack his gym shoes and she might be late for work. Tolerance, education about road use from an early age; and general lessons in manners for all ages would be a good start. Quote
