swanny1970 Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 Hi all Just a bit of advice if you can please. Over the past two weeks, the gear stick has 'jumped' out of gear several times. Driving home from Wigan last night and the gears decided to play up. At first, could not get acceleration, thought it was the MAF so disconnected it. This gave me more power. Got back to Liverpool no problems and took the wife shopping! When we got back in the car, I could only manage, with a struggle, first and second gears - third, fourth, fifth and reverse were impossible to get into. The gear stick would not even push over towards third gear. Drove home at 15mph in second gear to many a strange (and angry!) look. Had a friend who knows a bit about cars to have a look at it this morning and he thinks the gearbox has gone. He said he thinks that the DIF might have dropped (not sure what that means lol) Just wanted to know if any of you recognise these problems being associated with the gearbox. Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Peter Quote
insider Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 Have you checked the gear selector cables? There are a number of posts on the forum relating to these (difficulty engaging gears).Unfortunately, if it's not this then it does sound like a more serious gearbox problem. Quote
seatkid Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 I think its unlikely to be the gearbox. Read this thread. It'll be either the selector stack or a problem with the cables. Quote
swanny1970 Posted October 2, 2007 Author Report Posted October 2, 2007 Hi, thanks for your replies. I have checked the selector cables and all seem fine, they are all connected and none are loose. I have spoken with a gearbox specialist who is going to have a look at it for me in the morning - he seems to think that it could well be the gear box, so I will let you know tomorrow how I get on. He said that he can repair my box and refit it - just wondering if this is worthwhile? He seems a genuine enough guy, as I asked about getting a clutch done at the same time and the cost for this. He said if it needed doing, he would fit it for no extra labour charge as the gearbox would already be out (another bloke told me it would Quote
swanny1970 Posted October 7, 2007 Author Report Posted October 7, 2007 Hi Just wanted to say a huge thanks to seatkid and insider and to let anyone else know the result of the problem I had. Took the car to a Gearbox and Clutch specialist who found the problem to be a seized selector. Whipped this off, replaced with a new one and happy days!! I was told by several friends that it was definitely the gear box that had gone, but after the replies from seat and insider, I thought I would get this checked out by a reputable bloke before investing in a recon gear box. What turned out initially to be Quote
