Transmission "run-out"/wobble

:) ugh!, My gal has developed a wobble that "feels" like wheel wobble, but the wheel aint wobbling- Its something else, front end, feels near side. any idea's? :o

 

:) It's just coming up to it's first 10,000 mile service) :),and booked in for tuesday.....the bulb failure warning lamp is also lit but I cant find any bulbs out! :angry:

Presumably you mean a wobbling steering wheel - at low speed? Sure its just not wheel balance? - a pigeon nesting in your alloys?

worse than wheel balance...the whole car shakes ...sometimes sideways at about 50mph

Sounds like a thorough inspection is needed. Check engine and gearbox mountings, tie rod ends, suspension bushes, driveshafts, could possibly be shock absorber.

Might sound a daft question but are the wheel nuts tight. If they are try swopping the spare with each in turn if you think it may have been badly kerbed. It could be a bent wheel, specially the steel ones. I'd have a look at the CVs, may be one has partially seized. Jack the front and secure safely with good stands and chock well at the rear. Run slowly in gear and watch for any run out of the running gear and wheels. A problem like that should show itself quite easily. If it is worse under overrun or accelaration then it could be the mounts as suggested.

02 means it was first registered in uk (new) AFTER 01/03/02...right?

i ALSO GOT A WTY FROM THE SELLING DEALER[NON FORD],SO THEY MIGHT GET A CALL,BUT THE ABOVE LEFT ME GOBSMACKED, I'm waiting for their response wed morning

I had a bad vibration problem when braking at high speed and it turned out to be warped disks. This happened twice in one year and 6,000 miles. Both times repaired under warranty.

I had a bad wobble problem on a new Escort once.

 

At about 40/50 mph the whole front end used to wobble about, a bit watching a jelly wobbling.

 

After a lot of investigation, it turned out that both CV's ( I think that's what they are called, connect the drive shafts to the gearbox) hadn't been greased from new.

 

Must have been one of those tea-break cars!!!

 

The CV's were greased up and all the wobble stopped.

 

Could be you have a similar problem.

 

Anyway should be covered by the warranty.

Dave-G - I've PM'd you seperately on this but I'm looking for advice on the same problem with my 03 Tdi Ghia auto.

 

The symptons are the whole car shakes/wobbles particularly at 40-60 mph and more so when loaded or going uphill. If I ease off the accelerator the wobble goes. There's very little vibration coming through the steering wheel so it looks like tracking/wheel balance is ok. All tyres were new 3k miles ago. Rear shocks replaced at last service (40k).

 

The service dealer has checked it and verified the problem but doesn't know what the cause is - it's in again on Thursday for a thorough checking so any pointers would be useful.

Had this with mine - and there is a TSB on TIS about it - did it myself and cured it immediately!..

Summary

 

Should a customer express concern about vibrations and oscillations of the steering wheel at speeds between80 and 120 km/h, the probable cause is excessive stress between the front crossmember and the chassis of the vehicle. To rectify this concern, first check the wheels/tyres and the brakes to make sure that there are no other possible causes for the vibrations. In addition, align the crossmember and check and adjust the front wheel alignment.

Note:

All four wheels must be taking the weight of the vehicle when the bolts on the front crossmember are released.

 

 

Note:

Only undo the bolts, do not completely take them out.

All fixed now under warranty! The report back from the garage was NSR CV Joint replaced. - I hope they meant NSF !

Did you have it serviced after it was a year old? (and also when it was 2 years old)Ford are quite strict on that being a condition of warrenty, every 12 months or 10,000 miles which ever comes sooner, I think Seat are the same but the Sharan is just done on varable mileage, also i don't think imported car have the 3rd year warrenty as yours is over 2 years old you'd might be better chasing the 3rd party warrenty people
