BrianAll Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 key will turn to the left a bit more (to lock the central locking) but won't return to the upright position (12 o'clock) to enable the key to come out. Has been a bit tight when drawing the key out this last few weeks, but now its totally stuck. Have been able to use spare key to unlock car from passenger side and able to drive away, but can't get the key out of drivers door. Is anybody able to help with some tips or pointers please ? Thanks, Brian (Norwich) :D Quote
mumof4 Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 A member had this happen a few weeks ago, ended up taking the door barrell out i believe ..have you tried wd40? Quote
onslow Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 I would take the handle off completely its only held on by on star key, then im sure you would be able to get it out Quote
big_kev Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 It sounds like a mechanical failure of the lock barrel........ see...... http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?showtopic=13764 Also contains a link to ebay for repair kit ! Quote
BrianAll Posted September 28, 2007 Author Report Posted September 28, 2007 Great, thanks everybody. I will try and get the handle off tomorrow. I think I saw a star screw that needs to come undone. I'll go down to Panks in Norwich tomorrow and see if they have a tool to get this undone or off to Ford and see how amusing their price is. Thanks big_Kev for the link to past posting and the FAQ link in your signature. Took me to Mk I door card removal if I need to go that far. Someone posted to say that if tight/hard-up can swap the locks over from passnger side. Appeals to me that one so will try and get key out first then look at swapping the locks over. Thanks again, will let you know how I get on. While I'm here, Onslow, did you get to the bottom of your noise problem on your 1998 recent purchase ?Cheers,Brian Quote
BrianAll Posted September 29, 2007 Author Report Posted September 29, 2007 Hi, purchased star shaped torx bit to undo the handle and after a bit of jiggling the handle came off easily. Slid off circlip and gently seperated the relevant parts (spring loaded so liable to spring around if released). Indeed found a mechanical breakdown within the lock unit. The alloy bit that leads from the barrel to the central locking plastic bit, had broken into 4 bits at the fragile end. I plan to move the passenger side lock to the drivers side tomorrow, then get a repair kit as suggested,. Before buying a kit fror Quote
BrianAll Posted October 8, 2007 Author Report Posted October 8, 2007 Hi, just thought I would update. Phoned plenty of car dismantlers and scrap dealers around Norwich and found 1 with a Galaxy. He wanted Quote

BrianAll Posted October 10, 2007 Author Report Posted October 10, 2007 Quick update: part received today from VW. It is the right part. Will fit it Saturday in the daylight, and take a couple of snaps. Chuffed to have saved a load of cash. Brian Quote
saintscott Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 had the same problem, key got stuck in drivers door and i removed the handle which is only held in place by one star screw and found that the end of the barrel had disintegrated.after a couple of minutes of jiggling with the barrel the key was released.decide to remove the passenger side handle and swap them over until i could get it fixed.this worked fine and all in all it took me about 10mins.unfortunately i had to smash the front quarter light glass to get into the car and this cost me about Quote
MartinB Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 Hi folks, I also have this exact issue, except its the Seat Alhumbra, which is identical to the galaxy except for dashboard (as far as i can see) and external appearance. First occurance was last night, key sticking in both front doors unable to get key out. This occuring at same time on both doors would indicate it can't be a physical issue, more a mechanical one. The mechanism is working (brute force prevails, 6'5"x22 stone goes a long way on a key) but it doesnt want to open. Atm i am using the remote to lock and unlock or the rear door. Which works locks/unlocks perfectly. I had originally assumed the locks had frozen, it was -5 outside last night, however this morning, the frost all gone and a slight wind blowing, the locks are still sticking. Spent 10 mins swearing at the car before hulking it out with the key. I am assuming all parts of my alhumbra are pretty much the same as the galaxy? door locks included? or will the locks be completely different? Thus the fix as well? Quote

The Seat Alhambra is a VW Sharan with a Seat badge on .The Ford Galaxy is a VW Sharan with some different trim and depending on the model different Engine & Gearbox. The locks are exactly the same for all these, worth checking the prices between the dealers for identical parts. Quote
MartinB Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 Cool thx. I haven't seen the VW version, in fact i don't think i've seen anyone up here driving a VW at all.. of any kind  Seen an american like version of the galaxy (except it was about big enough to fit mine into it..) can't remember name tho. I'll check for spares tho with diff dealers. Even diff ford dealers here have totally and wildly different prices.... Quote
sparky Paul Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 (edited) If it's the usual problem with the lock barrel internals, there's still the seller on fleabay selling the repair kit, if that's any help to you... do a search for 'galaxy lock'. Edited November 23, 2007 by sparky Paul Quote
MartinB Posted November 24, 2007 Report Posted November 24, 2007 Oddly enough, the problem seems to have fixed itself. Key is working fine again, possibly they were frozen, however i tend to feel it is a sign of wear and tear and replacing them would be a better option. I'll look into the repair kits and see if my mechanic is willing to apply them and replace the locks. Quote
