_dg Posted January 24, 2004 Report Posted January 24, 2004 I have just been reading how you can dead lock the car with just one turn of the key in the door, but you can central lock the car if you turn the key twice. Also central locking is stated as operating on the four doors, but dead locking does the boot too. I can't see why you would want to central instead of dead lock the car? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 24, 2004 Report Posted January 24, 2004 |Maybe this makes it clearer:Central locking just means thaty ou can lock or unlock all the doors including tailgate from one place - usually from either front door, or by using a remote control "plipper".Deadlocking means that the door lock mechanism is disconnected from the handles, so as Fredt said, anyone breaking in cannot unlock the doors in the "normal" way.On the facelifted cars, and maybe some of the "first generation" shaped ones, the remote key will lock all doors (central locking) AND apply the deadlocking at the same time. ALARM MAN Posted January 24, 2004 Report Posted January 24, 2004 Just a quick one Central locking locks doors + bootDeadlocking secures from inside and out Option 1 You leave your little girl/boy asleep in the car you can lock but not dead lock So if they wake up they can get out ! Imagine waking up and your locked in ( fire ) Panic Hey kids love that. Option 2 Also Pets maybe left in (you might not have one but plenty do) So if alarmed it turns it off for your Pet to plod around and no alarm setting off. Hope that clears up your thoughts Ian Quote
grifjl Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 1.9 TDi Sharan, 02 reg. So, how does one shut the doors and leave the alarm off (for the sleeping kiddies?) Quote
rwtomkins Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Yes, same question - you've got the kiddies all strapped up in the car and you just want to leave them there for a minute while you dash into a shop or something, keeping them within eyesight in case the car spontaneously combusts. You can't put the alarm on because their movements inside the car will set it off. So how do you lock the doors without switching the alarm on? Quote
Xenonman Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 To lock the car without alarm and no deadlocking turn key in lock 45 deg left then 90 deg left in quick succession, the LED will flash once on the first turn but not on the second turn....Done! Quote
seatkid Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 On MK 1 , with the remote fob, press lock - car will lock, deadlock and alarm. Press lock again- deadlock releases and alarms off, though the car will still be locked externally. Similar thing with the keys, lock twice in succession. (The LED only blinks when the deadlocks/alarm are armed) Quote
Xenonman Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Ah yes I just tried that, you don't need to put the key in the lock, just press the lock button twice on the remote, that disables the alarm and deadlock. Quote
groundbased Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 Hm. but will the remote key do this on the facelift version? We had this problem recently where the kids and MIL were inside. The keys slipped down inside the child seat, and the button got pressed so the doors locked and deadlocked. Couldn't get the keys out from the child seat and the button on the drivers door handle would not open the doors. Were on the verge of braking windows, but MIL managed to free the keys after about 25 mins! Quote
insider Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 Yes, same thing on newer models - press button once to deadlock/enable alarm, twice to lock without deadlocks/alarm enabled. Quote
MrT Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 You also have to be careful over locking then unlocking the car when leaving people inside it. If you lock it, then unlock it and walk away without having opened a door, it will think you have not entered the car and automatically relock (deadlock) it and set the alarm after a short period of time. I did this at a shopping centre and left the family locked inside the car with the alarm going off and no way for them to open the doors. Quote
