I've had the car a Y reg TDi 1.9 for about a year and I'm finding that it's performance is gradually worsening. I'm struggling like mad to get it to go up hills and I find that I generally really have to push it hard to get started out off junctions etc. Is there something wrong and has anyone else experienced this? What's recommended (can't afford a new car!!!)

Cheers, Jon

Unplug the MAF sensor first to see if it makes a difference....

If it makes no difference your MAF is probably knackered....

If it gets worse then your MAF is probably ok.

not necessarily .... ours was worse when uplugged but immeasurably better when replaced .. they dont just 'go' suddenly they seem to become less responsive over time

to the OP - how many miles has it done - if they are going it seenms to start at 50/60k and get steadily worse...

Yeah, people are probably right with the MAF sensor, just another thought though, will not have a fuel cap make any difference to the fuel pressure in any way? I had mine nicked a while back, could this be part of the issue? Cheers, Jon

I'll check the milage, when people say 'unplug' the MAF sensor, do you mean the wire coming off the air intake pipe or taking out the sensor completely?

there is like a socket thingy on a clip that goes to the MAF..just unplug that.No need to remove the whole MAF.But make sure that you cover the connectors so they dont get filthy. You can drive the car with it unplugged.

well you can pick up fuel caps relatively cheaply these days..try a breakers yard..but i dont know if driving without one would affect performance..though i wouldnt recommend it as it is there for a purpose.

Hey presto!!! After disconnecting the sensor lead the car's performance has improved very significantly! Ok, question 1. Does this mean I need a new MAF sensor? 2. Can I drive around safely with this dosconnected? Thanks! Jon

1. Yes Jazzman you do need a new MAF sensor ....... stay clear of the cheap aftermarket ones.

2. Yes you can but I wouldn't as ultimately this affects the emissions / economy / performance.

Yep and yep...

you can drive with it disconnected, yes it will affect mpg ..my Gal had a disconnected MAF for a few months till i was allowed to start repairing her and it was the first thing i did.She did pass an MOT with it disconnected, so effect on emissions can be debateable..depends how good your emissions were before hand i guess. As for affecting performance, once you get a new MAF on there it will be like a ferrari compared to what it is now!.

You can drive around without the MAF sensor without any detriment - just lack of full performance.

So if you want your car as new.......change the MAF sensor.......

There are some reputable sellers on ebay, as that is where i got my replacement from..granted you must know exactly what it is you need.On the old MAF will be a part number.

True..there are some crap ones on ebay..but word of mouth is better..i would recommend the seller i used as he was patient with my endless questions and i had next day delivery plus it was a genuine bosch one.

Oi..you keep editing your post when i am replying to you.lol

again..there are places where you can go and do an exchange..take your old..get a new one.But make sure it is the correct one for your vehicle as there are different ones for different model/years of galaxy etc..

I had a problem with a 1996 1.9 90ps lack of power ,changed the MAF,it did not fix, took the car to a diesel specialist no faults were stored in the ecu. I noticed the accelerater pedal seemed low.It was fixed by lifting the pedal and retightening the bolt, it had worked loose over the years simple fix cost nothing

They've changed the part numbers ...... that was easy. Google the part number and see what it comes up with.
