Just got the check brake pad warning and I've had the tyres off to check the condition of discs and pads

Front discs are 25mm thick with the pads ranging from 8-10 between metal back plate and disc

Back discs 8.3 and 8.35 mm thick with an average of 3mm left on the pads,

now AFAIK the front discs need to be changed at about 20mm thick and the backs at 8mm

Does anybody know what the original thickness of the discs are, I know the fronts have been changed once at about 40K (car has now done 85k) the backs have never been changed (at least since 20k when we bought the car)

Given loads of dosh I would get the rear discs changed with the pads I wonder how much wear there is left on them - surface is fine they are just getting a bit thin but I wont have time to change them for a few months (2-3k)

Depends on the disc size.

Front

288mm are 25mm thick new

300mm & 313mm are 26mm new

Back

268mm are 10mm new

294mm are 14mm new

Normally, 2mm wear is allowed for solid discs, 4mm for vented.

I think thats right... HTH

Ahh well the fronts are 25.2mm so I assume that they must have started at 26 but were they 300 of 313 can I tell from ....

Or am I going to have to have the wheels off again, if the larger size is fitted on the front does that mean the larger are fitted on the back??

From your info and assuming that I have the larger size on the back they should have been changed at 12mm so I am surprised that at the many services Ford has missed the opportunity !! Bugger if thats the case they really need doing

I thought the 288mm fronts were the MK1's and the larger ones were the MK2's

ditto for the 268mm rears.

Not necessarily.

It not quite as simple as that, but then it never is. :16:

As I understand, although this is no guarantee... all mk.1s are fitted with the smaller front and rear discs. Early mk.2s (2000-2002) could be fitted with 288mm, 300mm or 313mm discs, depending on engine, transmission and wheel size combination. The later 2003-on mk.2s are all 300/313mm discs.

The larger rear discs were introduced on certain 2003-on models, although the 268mm rears were still fitted to some models after 2003.

That sounds very confusing... :16:
