Nudger Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Guys, Following my Gearbox problem posting. Thank you for your comments. Some of the info was enlightening and useful. In trying to find out why my gearbox failed at 50,000 miles (no hard use, no towing caravan, trailer, boat etc. no racing)... I was trying to find out what work was done under the Flywheel recall. The VOSA website indicates that the remedial work entailed replacement of the flywheel. My car went into the Ford dealer at least twice. The first time they took a look and confirmed that my car was affected and that the recall work needed to be carried out. However, I learnt today that the flywheel was not replaced. Just the clutch plate. Something clearly went drastically wrong with the transmission but the more I investigate the more confusing it gets. Any comments please? Regards, Nudger H. Quote
seatkid Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 The recall clearly states if your VIN is affected, the DMF must be replaced. If it wasnt then that explains the failure of the gearbox. VOSA:-Concern : FLYWHEEL MAY FAILDescription : The Duel Mass Flywheel could fail in such a way that the friction pad and spring break through the duel mass flywheel housing. This could cause rough running, noise and vibration and in extreme cases could result in transmission damage and localised burning of the engine under shield insulationRemedial Action : Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and renew the Duel Mass Flyweheel and clutch assembly.Contact Ford Customer Support and get ranting. The recalls on VOSA are legally binding and must be carried out if the vehicle is presented. The garage were grossly negligent and you suffered consequential losses as a direct result. Write a letter to that effect to the top bod (MD) at the dealer in question and demand a full repair and compensation and an equivalent courtesy car FOC for the duration of the repair. Insist on a full Ford inspection, new gearbox, clutch and, of course, DMF. The inspection to check further damage has not been done (engine/transmission) Quote
Nudger Posted September 23, 2007 Author Report Posted September 23, 2007 Thanks for your comments seatkid. I have a letter outstanding to Ford already. Faxed it to them on Monday and posted also. No reply yet. I have had the repair done now by my local garage. Cost Quote
seatkid Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Ford dealership and Ford Custmer care had already refused to contribute hence I had no option but to go elsewhere. If the recall is a safety issue - and I think this one is ("burning to engine shield") - then they are legally obliged to rectify it FOC. Tommie1 Posted September 26, 2007 Report Posted September 26, 2007 Hey, I got this problem at that time with a Sharan 130 HP TDI. It happened when the car was about 1y old, and before there was a recall. When the flywheel broke, I was speeding a bit on the German motorway, until I had to slow down for a traffic jam. During braking, I felt some vibrations, and stopped the car. A guy behind me stopped also, and warned me that there ware a lot of sparks coming out under the car. At that moment I saw some smoke coming out under the hood of the car. I decided to stop the engine and call for help after opening the hood being prepared with a fire extinguisher. A bit later, my car was loaded on a truck, and delivered to a VW garage. They took a brief look and told me that they could not do this in one day. A Taxi was called to bring me to an AVIS car rental. One week later, I got a call that my car was ready and that VW would take care to bring it to my home. They explained me that they had to change the gearbox, clutch and flywheel. To do this, they must dismount the front axle and engine... But to me everything was done at zero cost, and a few months later I discovered that VW recalled a lot of cars for this problem. Quote
