mike99 Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 I don't think I'll be bothering with the new galaxy after reading some of the problems people are getting. But what about the s max? are they the same?? do they have a dpf? I don't like these dpf's they're nothing but trouble on the vehicles we have at work so I want to keep clear of them.Any advice appreciated. Quote
insider Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 The S-MAX is basically the same car as the Galaxy, built in the same factory and shares most of the components and engines (except for the Volvo 2.5T petrol engine which is only available on the S-MAX).Therefore, you can expect very similar problems on both vehicles. However, bear in mind that people will write copiously about their problems but rarely about how good and problem-free their car has been. Compare the volume of sales with the number of problems and you should find that the vast majority haven't suffered any problems. You might be one of these! Problems with DPFs are not exclusive to Ford - you could always buy one with a petrol engine then you won't have one! Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Unless there has been a very recent change, the new Galaxies/S-Maxes on the UK market are available with or without a DPF. 1.8L diesel definately doesn't have one, nor will it be getting one either. 2.0L is available with or without. DPF failure rates are not very high, and virtually all have been caused by the drive cycle adopted - short runs (less than 3 miles or 5 minutes) at low speed are the worst. Continuous low speed operation isn't really a problem, as the regen (burn-off) cycle will be able to do its job. Cruising on a dual carriageway at anything over 50mph will almost certainly invoke a 'natural regeneration' of the DPF as the exhaust gas will be hot enough to do it. Best advice if you do have one fitted is to make sure that the car gets a reasonable run each week - at least 20 minutes continuous running, preferably in a non urban environment where a reasonable road speed can be used. This applies to any vehicle fitted with a DPF. George. Quote
