The rear screen brake light on my Mk 1 is not working, the bulbs are ok, there is no juice to the black/red wire when the pedal is depressed. Can someone please tell me where the black/red wire picks up from, thanks, Steve

Assuming all the fuses are okay, I would check the tailgate flexy wiring first of all, its a common failure point.

Unclip the convoluted rubber boot which covers the wiring at the top right of the tailgate and check the wiring where the high level brake light pair split from the tailgate loom. If you do find a break here, its worth cutting into the loom and checking the rest of the tailgate wiring as it is likely that other wires will be showing signs of damage.

well done sparky Paul!! Absolutely spot on diagnosis, seven other cables had damaged insulation and the feed and earth for the screen brake light were snapped off. I hate to think of the consequences of leaving it unchecked; at best a blown fuse or two, at worst a fair chance of a fire.
