Nudger Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 My Galaxy 1.9TDI Ghia needs a new gearbox due to complete failure of 5th and 6th gears and gringing other gears. The failure was sudden with no prior warning. Ford have told me that this is due to fair wear and tear at 50,000 miles / almost 4 years old. They quoted Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 I have two galaxies - a 1997 with 138K on the clock with original clutch & gearbox the other a 2001 with 120k on the clock with orignal clutch and Gearbox. So it doesn't sound like a reasonable mileage to me - although you would need to take itno account how it was used. I would certainly ask some questions about why the failure should take place only 5000 after a recall repair. Why didn't they check notice or advise that there was a problem then? I would assume that they replaced the clutch at the same time - so in fact you have a total gearbox failure 8 months after. I would look to them for a free replacement - It may be that the gearbox oil was partially drained and not replaced. I am not a legal expert but I would ask someone for legal advice. Quote
seatkid Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 (edited) The Dual Mass Flywheel should be covered in full under warranty and Yes, its likely that it has caused the gearbox failure. Put your detailed account and claim in writing. Send it to the dealer who changed the DMF and a copy to Ford Customer services along with a covering letter. Get in touch by phone with Ford and discuss. Its likely they will repair the DMF FOC and offer to cover parts cost for gearbox at the very least. 99% of manual gearboxes are expected to last the lifetime of the car and manual gearboxes are definitely NOT classed as a wear and tear item in any manufacturers warranty! Auto gearboxes are perhaps a different kettle of fish. Edited September 16, 2007 by seatkid Quote
gregers Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 over 6k,bloody hell,as seat kid suggests id certainly be firing off a few letters and probably obtain some form of legal info, lets hope you get the result you want. Quote
jkspoff Posted September 16, 2007 Report Posted September 16, 2007 Thats sounds drastic, 50k and failed gearbox, unusual for the VW 6 speed box. I would have been tempted at that cost of fixing it, just to trade it in to an unsuspecting car supermarket, where they will slap a warranty on it and cover the repairs for the next buyer. Quote
