insider Posted September 13, 2007 Report Posted September 13, 2007 I loved my old Galaxy and decided to buy a new one ( reg 07 ) 2.0L Ghia ... 2. There is a high pitched whine that comes from either the front or the rear of the vehicle but by moving the steering wheel left or right the whine goes, then returns when the wheel is in the middle position ( both wheels straight ) This is really annoying as its something like the old TV test card tone.If you turn the engine off the whine continues then fades away.Is it a diesel (2.0 TDCi) or petrol? If diesel, I believe the 2.0 TDCi is the only model with electro-hydraulic power steering, all others have hydraulic. Could it be the power steering electric motor/pump causing this whine? Being a new car though I would get it back to the Dealer to sort out asap. Quote
Lindsay Davies Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 I've been told that steering whine on my 2.0Tdci Ghia ('06 model) is due to it being electro-hydraulic pump and is normal. Interestingly on mine the noise comes when steering is off-centre (not just on full lock) but goes when it's left in the central position for a few seconds! Like yours the whine fades after the ignition is turned off. Has always been that way and garage says that there is nothing that needs fixing. L Quote

LI wouldn't let that stop you complaining, both to the dealer and Ford Customer services. Perhaps if they replace the pump under warranty the new one won't make the same noise? Quote
Squishy Posted September 17, 2007 Author Report Posted September 17, 2007 Thank you for all your comments. It is a Diesel engine to answer one of the questions. The garage is arranging a Ford Engineer to come and look at my car at the garage so maybe I can get to the bottom of the sigh and whine. The whine is annoying as its always there even when standsing still no hands on wheel.Have to wait and see what they say.ThanksSteve Quote
muppetdodger Posted September 17, 2007 Report Posted September 17, 2007 I've got a 2.0tdci new galaxy and get no steering whine at all, so dont accept the answer that it is how it should sound because it isnt! Quote

seatkid Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 All Electro hydraulic and even conventional power steering systems whine a bit. Most people dont notice it or seperate it from "engine noise". Quote
Squishy Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 Quick update regarding this.Ford Technical has checked over my car at the dealer I purchased it from. (They have been very helpful regarding this when they could not pin point the issue so i am not blaming the dealer in any way.)The outcome is that there is an issue regarding the sigh and whine that I Quote
Johnny B Goode Posted October 8, 2007 Report Posted October 8, 2007 :) If it helps. . . my `56 plate 2.0ltr ghia whines as well... . you can`t notice it so much when you`re driving , but when my wife takes it off the drive it sounds quite loud. I took it back to the dealer who assures me that this is normal. Hope this helps... John Quote

I`ll keep you all posted as to the progress ( or lack of ) and the outcome....rant over for the time being , but I will be BARKING at them on Monday... thankyou Edited December 2, 2007 by Johnny B Goode Quote

wazza Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 The whine on my car (2l petrol) became inceasingly worse a couple of weeks ago, went to fords on friday and they said it was the power steering, anyway they bled the pump (i think) but the noise there but slightly mr bearable. Anyway it has been booked in for a couple of days in 2weeks time, will update when I have a decent answer, by the way, My has been most helpful with us (evans halshaw in Bexley KENT) as I here some people appear to be palmed off with excuses. mumof4 Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 i wonder if there will be a recall? as a lot of peeps seem to have this whine. and if it leads to power steering failure..then that is def not good. Quote

ianbriscombe Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 I too have had problems with Ford. In Oct06 we bought a new 2.0 tdci Galaxy Ghia. The very next day the battery was flat, AA got it going so thought nothing of it. Went to Blackpool for the day, had a little picnic with the family making use of the nice little trays provided on the rear of the front seats. 20 mins later the battery warning light (Low Battery) followed by Alarm System Service Req than all the dash started clicking and flashing! AA Again came to get it started. Took the car to the garage... No fault found. This happened several times. After many a complaint with Ford CRC we were given a like for like loan car. The garage had our car for just over a week, we were due to go off to Centre Parcs for the week and the garage were desperate for us not to take there loan car. We set off in our own useless un-reliable Galaxy. By the end of the week at Centre Parcs the car had been in the car park, the battery had again gone flat and opened all of the windows, The car inside was drenched and full of pine needles. Our 6 month old baby Quote

Grrrr... :o P.S ....Adrianf. .. I live in Barnwood , Gloucester Well. . .surprisingly the car was ready the following evening , much to my joy . It`s now run for 2 & a half days from collecting it only for the pwr steering to fail AGAIN (Saturday night ) just as we`re pulling off the drive to attend a "family get-together". So , after not been able to attend the family do , this has made me even more angry !This morning (Sunday) , I`ve been out to the car to check the oil & water etc. . . check the pwr steering oil (all ok) , I take a closer look at the p/s reservoir to find there are NO wires going to it so there couldn`t have been an electrical fault with it in the first place !I then proceeded and started it up to find the p/s working perfectly well !........I`m going to give it a test drive this afternoon and keep you all posted as to how it goes. (Attn. Adrian-the post above this one)I`m sorry to read how many problems you`ve been having there mate , I thought I was struggling until I read your post , if it`s any help I`ve had 6 months of trouble free motoring with our Galaxy , but you`ve seemed to have ended up with 2 "Friday" cars. Cheers John Quote
recycle Posted December 13, 2007 Report Posted December 13, 2007 I also get the power steering noise issue. It is worst at full lock but it is always there in some form. I too have been told by the garage that this is characteristic of the car. Are you all getting the same message? Is anyone getting the issue fixed and if so how? Quote
jonwright Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 i have a 57 galaxy and it does get a very slight wine at full lock but certainly doesnt sigh round the back! Quote
