seatkid Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Here's some more advice from the government about how you can save fuel, save the planet and still travel as fast as the law allows. p.s. This advice does not apply to people living in leicestershire who seem to think this advice is cobblers. Quote
big_kev Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 We could do with all the global warming we can get before the next ice age kicks in. Apparently this is due to start within the next 100 years....probably sooner. Global warming my r'ss Quote

tim-spam Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 the aerodynamics of a wardrobe, sideways.Drag coefficient of Sharan = 0.28, which is very good. The frontal area is however obviously larger than the average saloon car, but the actual aerodynamics are pretty good. Quote

tim-spam Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 (edited) I tried (but obviously failed) to bring this thread back to some sense. So, to try again, I'll state something that should be obvious to all who read the beginning of this thread. Diesel is the only serious choice for today's motoring, especially for larger cars (such as MPV's) and average and above mileages. Whether or not the petrol-heads like it, this is the reality. mumof4 Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Now i am a petrol head i must agree with you as the miles i cover usually costs me a heck of a lot more and i fill up a lot more....i dont drive far as much as i used to because of this so hence plan my routes a lot more carefully .My next car will most definately be a diesel. It may be higher in price but i will save more in the long run. appologies for sending the thread off track a few days ago..went a bit doolally. insider Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 I agree totally - it's a no brainer!! Not quite, you should do the maths first. As tim-spam says "especially for larger cars (such as MPV's) and average and above mileages"You need to calculate your expected petrol/diesel usage according to your annual mileage, along with the tax and insurance costs and the expected future value of the car for the period of time you expect to own it. The saving in fuel cost does not always outweigh the higher initial purchase price of a diesel car. (That's assuming cost is your primary concern). Quote
tim-spam Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 The saving in fuel cost does not always outweigh the higher initial purchase price of a diesel car....but it nearly always does. And the driving characteristics are so much better as well. Quote

seatkid Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 The 1.4tdi engine in the latest Fabia is a noisy bag of old ball bearings at least the one I drove was. And on the test run, using usual style, it clocked up a really impressive 41mpg. The 1.2 engine in comparison is a peach, much better than the 1.4 petrol btw The point I was making is you should try to dismiss your predudices and preconceptions when buying a car, look at the cold facts and if looking for cheapest cost of ownership, do the sums. See sums above: payback in 15000 miles or less. Quote
