Just a thought, the heated front screen will not work if the rear heating is switched on at the same time. Good luck.

Are you sure  ? I think that both mine heat at the same time, although I haven't checked positively. If they don't, why don't they? Too much of a drain on the electrics?

Yup, front and rear screen heaters work at the same time on mine, and with both fans at full speed too.

Ivor,

Just checked mine.....If I have the rear heater going and I switch on the front screen the rear heater stops/illumination goes out on the switch.

I don't know if this is normal on the Mk1 TDi.

I wonder if anyone else with a Mk1 can ckeck this!!!!

Yes I can clarify this on my old Mk1. you couldnt have all 3 on, must have been a safety cut otu due to power being zapped.

Heated windscreen fuse is F27 50 amp located above the relays. Relay is K164

On the subject of excessive current draw, try using the elcetric windows when you've got the headlights on. They will go dim (not a lot, but they do!).

I'm glad I found this topic. Having the same issues, only a previous owner has used a 20a fuse...I thought it was a bit odd when I saw the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual which stated 50!

Thank you! I can now change the fuse to the correct one with the knowledge that I did in fact read the diagram correctly.
