cmulhere Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 Hi all, My new company car will be a MKiii Galaxy, and i am looking at options for carrying bikes. I can't seem to find any decent make of rear door carriers around. Thule or Atera don't make them for the new Galaxy, and I don't want anything that is cheap and nasty. I have considered a tow bar carrier, but this will work out expensive as I don't need a tow bar for any other purpose. I already have a roof box, so will only be able to fit a couple of roof carriers on. Don't want to go down the roue of fitting them inside the car on the internal rack either. In essence I am after a rear carrier that is capable of carrying 3 bikes (4 would be better but not essential) Do Ford have anything suitable - I have loooked online but can't see anything.... Anyone know of anything that might work? Cheers, Chris Quote
big_kev Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 I would think the generic Thule Clip-on's would fit. http://www.thule.com/Thule/ProductListPage____45895.aspx I dont think that the MK3 Galaxy hasn't been out long enough to have specific carriers made for it. Quote
AndyBee Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 I queried exactly the same question with Ford and Thule and the only option seems to be a tow bar mounted carrier. The rear door on the MK 3 is a different construction to previous versions (probably lighter weight and bonded edge to edge glass) and is not up to carrying a door mounted bike carrier. We used to have a Thule 973 which is great for a Mk 1 or 2, but we have now sold it as no good on the Mk3 (Thule will not recommend it). We are doing without at the moment as the cost of a tow bar + carrier is going to be a few hundered quid. Please let me know if you find a good solution ! Quote
mumof4 Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 The only MK3 Galaxy i have seen with a bike carrier was at Dalby forest, and it had a tow bar mounted one...Was strange as it looked very low. Quote
cmulhere Posted September 4, 2007 Author Report Posted September 4, 2007 With the lack of an obvious solution to this, I have ordered 2 roof mounted cycle carriers which will get me out of trouble for now. If Thule, Atera, Ford etc don't come up with a solution in the longer term I will have to go for a tow bar mounted carrier. Here's hoping!! Thanks for all your comments. Chris Quote
silversurfer Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 I spent many hour researching this & was also on owner of a MkII with a Thule 973. That was great but you cannot attach it to a Mk III in anyway at all. The base of the door is a very wide flimsy piece of plastic not suited to carrying any load at all. My prefered solution was towbar mounted (cos I couldn't possibly reach the roof when I come back from a dirty bike ride across the moors) & I am a convert - hugely stable load carrying even with 4 bikes on a thule 903. Give it a go. Quote
supermike Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 I too have spent quite a while researching this. Ford don't do a rear-door carrier for the mk3. I have a cheap (20 quid at Tesco) 3 bike strap on carrier that's I've been using for years on a mk2 Galaxy and Mondeo estate. It does fit the mk3, but it sits very low (bike wheels only about 6 inches off the road!). I normally fit the roofbars and tie a webbing strap between them and the bikes to take most of the weight. I noticed that pendle recommend their strap-on 2-bike and 3-bike carriers for the mk3 Galaxy: http://www.pendle-bike.co.uk/nullres.asp?V...ar=2006-PRESENT" target="_blank">http://www.pendle-bike.co.uk/nullres.asp?V...ar=2006-PRESENT These seem quite reasonable at roofbox.co.uk, so I might take a flyer on one and let you all know how I get on... Mike. Quote
